Photographer’s Note

As you can see spring gathered momentum here in Germany. My photo shows magnolias in front of the electors castle in Bonn - since 1818 the main building of Bonn University.
It was built for the Cologne Elector and archbishop Clemens August of Bavaria in it's present form about the year 1700 according to the plans of the Italian architect Enrico Zuccali. Because this wasn't enough, the elector in addition had a great summer residence , 30 km away near the small town Brühl and some other smaller castles.
The electors and archbishops of Cologne since the Middle Ages weren't allowed to spend the night in Cologne because of differences with the Cologne citizenship. These even culminated in a battle in1288. So the holding of court mainly took place in Bonn and in its surroundings.

In 1777 the castle in Bonn was totally destroyed by fire and after this partly rebuilt. In 1926 it was originally rebuilt but once again destroyed during the World War II in 1944 and than rebuilt in 1951. It is situated in the middle of the city. In front of it there's a wonderful park, the "Hofgarten". You can see this in the map view left hand.
