Photographer’s Note

There are legendary trains and lines that will always be remembered. The "Flying Hamburger" of the 30s is one of them, as it covered the distance between the cities of Berlin and Hamburg in just two hours and 18 minutes, which was sensational in those days.
Beginning on 15th December 2004, it will be possible to travel between the centres of Berlin and Hamburg in one and a half hours, with the possibility of achieving speeds of up to 230 km/h on the upgraded Hamburg–Berlin line. An early precursor of the ICE high-speed train was the VT 877 a/b diesel multiple unit, which operated on this line for a period of six years – from 1933 to 1939 – and became a legend.

The "Flying Hamburger“ was the prototype of an entire fleet of two to three-car express multiple units. Following the successful completion of trials with this new train type on the Hamburg–Berlin line and on the hilly Saalfeld–Bamberg line, the Reichsbahn decided in 1933 to operate these trains on their future national express rail network.
