Photographer’s Note

Here I show you the convent of Ursulines which was founded by this monastic order from Metz/France in 1711 on the outskirts of the Hessian town Fritzlar. The Ursulines are a Roman Catholic order founded at Brescia, Italy in 1535, primarily for the education of girls and the care of the sick and needy. In 1719 the convent of Fritzlar was completed. The ancient Katharinenkirche (church St. Catherine) in 1726 was consecrated to the convent's church.
Already in 1713 also the foundation stone for a school was laid next to the convent.

This school really has an eventful history. From 1877 to 1887 the nuns were expelled by the Chancellor of the German Empire, Otto von Bismarck, who wanted to diminish the political influence of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1888 this school of Ursulines was accredited again.
In Nazi era the school was closed and the convent was confiscated in 1941.
After the sister's return in 1945 the convent and the school experienced a rapid upswing.

My photo was taken from the cathedral's terrace above the convent.
