Photographer’s Note

This is the so called Buttermarkt (butter market) of Herborn in the German state Hessen with some of its wonderful half-timbered houses. The today's old houses of Herborn are mostly built after a blaze in the 16th and 17th century and they compose a wonderful ensemble in the town center. More than 400 half-timbered houses like these are preserved in the Old Town and a walk in the streets and the alleys is an impressive experience. Especially the market place is a real feast for the eyes.

Already in 1584 a university was founded here by Count Johann VI von Nassau-Dillenburg and it remained always the smallest university of Germany until 1817 when it was closed. This small university had a very good reputation and so students from all Europe went to college here. The counts therefore enacted that the population of Herborn had "to dress accordingly in proper style".
Here, in 1602 the first translation of the Bible of the Reformed Church was developed by Johannes Piscator. It formed in a decisive way life in the reformed folds of Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the USA.

You can see this square the whole day in real-time HERE.

Greetings to my TE-friends Chris and Alain! I have had the possibility of introducing Herborn to them.
