Photographer’s Note
Haha, yes, this photo can easily be mistaken to have been shot somewhere in Russia. But it was not. It is Darmstadt, on Mathildenhöhe, the Art Nouveau part of the town. And it belongs to a chapel, and of course there is a reason why this cupola cross is an Orthodox one. Princess Alix of Hesse (Darmstadt) married Tzar Nikolaus II in 1894. And so it was quite logical that they had built a Russian Chapel in Darmstadt for their frequent visits in town. Another interesting note which many locals even don’t know is that it was built by Leontij Nikolajewitch Nebnois, grandfather of Sir Peter Ustinov.
The chapel was recently renovated and I managed to be there at the perfect day, perfect time, perfect weather to take this photo.
