The “Mathildenhöhe”, with 180 meters over NN the highest rise of Darmstadt City, was already in 19. Century a garden of the Grand Duke’s and was built in the style of an English landscape park in 1833. The garden was designated to Mathilde Karoline Friederike of Wittelsbach, the wife of Grand Duke Ludwig III.. In the years 1877 to 1880 on the Mathildenhöhehe a water reservoir was built for the water supply of Darmstadt and in 1897 a Russian chapel. The land development of the southern area of the Mathildenhöhe was created by an Artist Colony created by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig in 1899. A “Hochzeitturm” (=wedding tower) in 1906 and exhibition building from the year 1908 was created by the architect Joseph Maria Olbrich. The wedding tower is a landmark of Darmstadt with a height of 48 meters , which offers a beautiful panorama on the city and the surrounding countryside.
