Photographer’s Note

Statue of St. Totnam on the Old Main Bridge with the Fortress of Marianberg and the vineyards in the background. Totnam was born in Ireland and martyred in Wurzburg in 689 along with St. Killian and St. Colman. Those three Irishmen brought Christianity to Wurburg and Franconia. St. Totnam was named the patron saint for the Bishopric of Wurzburg after his death. Some time ago I posted a photo of the statue of St. Killian on the bridge. Sorry, no photo of Colman but he too stands on the Old Main Bridge along with other holy men of Wurzburg. Main is the name of the river below the bridge.

Wurzburg is one of my favorite towns in Bavaria. I've been coming back here at least four times over the years - well, mostly to visit old friends. I like the old medieval town and it's university atmosphere - also quite touristy as it is the first/last town on the famous "Romantic Road" that begins/ends in Fussen.(The Romantic Road is a trade route during the Middle Ages. The towns along this roads still retain much of their medieval characters. Famous names like Balthasar Neumann, the builder; Tilmann Riemenschneider, the sculptor; and King Ludwig, the builder of the fairy tale castle will all come to mind). Wurzburg was almost fully destroyed in World War Two. Reconstruction & restoration work continued until late last century.
