Sundials for me is an evidence of ancient-wisdom. As windmills and aqueducts, using nature's forces for people benefits.
It is just natural to continue from my reflection post of Wurzburg Rathouse to this another side of the market-square on Domstrasse, adorned with a beautiful Sundial and a "more -modern" clock, on the tower's façade. The tower first built in 1180, and re-built in 1950 after bombed in 1945 / WW2 action.
Location of the Rathouse: 49.7932, 9.9287
I was drawn to yet another ancient sundial I saw in Heidelberg castle – soon to be posted. A web page about many Sundials in Germany.
Exp. bias+0.3, cropped sides.

Fine capture of clock and sundial, both of which can be seen in fine detail. Pleasant warm tones and good sharpness.

The subject is well framed. The point of view is showing the details and colours of the sundial clock and of the regular clock. The good luminosity is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

I like this clock tower detail photo. The view up is excellent. You got it at high clarity capturing many nice details. Excellent that you have managed to place both the sun and mechanical clock in one frame. Well done. Greetings, Miro.

You're capturing well this clock targets by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the both of the mechanic clock and the sundial installed by the wall of the building. And, it's interesting that mechanic clock uses Roman numeral and sundial uses Arabic numerals.

a very nice photograph of this very ornate sundial and clock. Nice warm colours good lighting and very clear. Good POV enabling the capture of both clock and sundial. Informative note to go with photograph .

Sundials are interesting and so are your notes.
We have a small one in our garden and when the town centre was revamped, they placed an interactive sundial in front of the library.
You have done well to include both the clock and the sundial in the same frame and keep the details so sharp. I love how the wall and stones have been colour co-ordinated with the time pieces. They make the whole so much more attractive.
My warm regards,

I like this clock tower detail photo. Excellent composition, good presentation too. Very well done

The first thing that strikes me here is the perspective, that long look up really draws the eye from bottom to top. These are always difficult to balance out, it seems the lines never quite match up correctly...but you've done a great job in getting this to level off. The "earthy,' rustic facade works very well in conjunction with the red colors in this image...and I think the tighter, vertical crop accentuates that contrast.
Beautiful detail in this sundial and clock. Ancient wisdom is right...how would we ever survive these days without all of the electronic devices, doe's anyone remember how to tell time if it's not a digital display?? Looking forward to that next pic you've mentioned featuring the sundial! Enjoy the day ahead.

"No human spirit has the path of the sun, moon and stars on" ist das Beste ich verstehen kann.
Am I even close? Nice show and tell, although I have no idea what to make of the sundial.

All the best,
UlfE (14138) 2013-08-21 23:05
Very well framed indeed. I would imagine that you carefully chosed the POV right under the tower of the Rathaus which perhaps was not easy since the sundial is not right under the clock. You did a perfect photo-job here TFS and have a nice day!

Hi Ike, Interesting two different clocks on the tower. we can compare if they show the same time. we can't at the mo ment as there is no sun.
Nice shot. Carpe diem!

wonderfully detailed shot of this amazing sundial. Super upwards POV that gives us a great idea of its setting, charm and character. Flawless execution and beautiful presentation.

your subject is very interesting and you have offered us a very sharp and delightful description of it in a well framed, elegant composition. I like very much the perspective, the details and the textures as well as how the golden tones vivify the image. There's a strange thing I've noticed: the colours of the big photo are different from those of the thumbnail under the heading "additional photos" further down on this page. I like them both although the atmosphere they convey is much different. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,

What we think of ancient civilization as primitive is deceiving, I think they were more advance for their time with inventions that are still being used today. Nice capture of those time pieces with good details. Well done, tfs.

Ciao dear Ike
You make an excellent point and I agree, sundials are so ancient and are full of mystery and wisdom. And this is a beautiful one. I like the tight framing, the colours and contrast. Excellent note aswell.
I say goodbye to you until October as I am now on holiday and write this from Abu Dhabi Airport. Take care of yourself.

Sensational composition, in this extended vertical, allowing us to see both the clock, as the sundial, so seeing them is a picture of the most suggestive.
Ideal the details and textures.
A magnificent lighting, as well as the sharpness.
Well done. I like.
Happy start to the week.

I read Carpe Diem below the upper clock; that means Enjoy the Day!
Since there was no sun, I can't tell if the solar clock was right on time when you took the picture!
Those are outstanding juxtaposed pieces of cleverness on the Rathouse that pay tribute to creative designers.

Seems you found some very beautiful old clocks there. I like this, you got two in just one shot. I like the composition, the details and the textures. The place seems really interesting!

Ciao e buona serata
