Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain) is the star attraction of Nürnberg (Nuremberg) erected around 1385 and standing in a corner of Hauptmarkt (Main market place), which is in front of the Rathaus (Town hall). This is where the famous Christmas Market "Christkindlesmarkt" is held every year during Advent.
Since completion 1396 the fountain has undergone a series of restorations. So many that the fountain today is more or less a replica of the original one, which in parts can be found in Germany's largest museum of cultural history Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg.
In 1586 an iron grating was added for protection, but it was still possible to use the fountain. In my photo you're able to see the pipe protruding the lattice and the pedestal for placing the bucket.
So, what is this lady doing? Well, she is reaching for the "Wishring" ("Wunschring"), which is a brass ring that - without any visible seam - is forged into the grating. If you turn it three times to the right (clockwise) while making a wish - and only one - you're able to believe...
But be careful what you wish for, as it's very possible that it might come true!

I immediately recognized this fountain from the thumbnail. Nuernberg (I prefer call it in German) is a real pleasant city and it's almost incredible the way it was built up again after WW II.
I visited this city several times when I was studying in Bayreuth
