Sundials is an evidence of ancient-wisdom, as windmills and aqueducts, using nature's forces for people benefits.
The old sundial in the Heidelberg castle premises, 49.4109, 8.7154 on the map (actually you can zoom in on Google-map and see a closer look). Roman numerals to show the time, and astrological signs to indicate time of the year.
A Wikipedia page about the castle, first built in the 13th century, but destroyed, demolished and ruined, than re-built while was under many conflicts and squabbles throughout the past. Yet, some elements on interest were left intact. Will show more from the castle in future posts.
In the 2 WS's, a view of the inner yard of the castle, the palace facade with the Sundial located on the old tower.
Exp. Bias +1.3, due to very dark cloudy day.

The low light engenders a particular atmosphere that is apposite to the subject. I like the shadow play and very good detail to be observed.

You're capturing well this Sundial by a good macro and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting to know the mechanism of Sundial. Surely, it's an evidence of ancient wisdom as you say, I also think. It would help much people's life in those days. And, it's also interesting in Roman numerals to show the time and astrological signs to indicate time of the year.

The tight frame is putting the sundial in evidence. The point of view is showing the details and colours of the sundial. The surrounding light has a good effect on the colours. Have a nice day.

An interesting capture of this very special sundial. The details and curves here make a very pleasant pattern too.

Good evening Ike,
Even though I remembered your previous mention of posting this picture, I still couldn't figure out what I was looking at in the thumbnail gallery!? I could make out the clouds, but they just didn't quite look right...but now it all makes perfect sense. :) Amazing to think this was how time was told, what happened on an overcast day?? As you say, ancient wisdom was certainly in play...it's fascinating to still have record of these kinds of historical inventions.
This close up provides a great look at the marvel, in all of its seemingly simplistic being. As far as some of the photographic details here, I really like the texture seen in this shot, it's rather vivid. Good composition as well to balance the width and fanning out of the graphic lines with an easy to follow perspective. Very nicely presented. Enjoy the week ahead. Take care.
Friendly regards from Az,.

I still can't figure out how to read these things. Nevertheless, thank you for the close-up giving us a chance to see the details. The shadows, various tints and the cracks add a level of interest.

The repetition of the old Roman numerals and the astrology signs add interest here. Impeccable sharpness and effective tight framing and composition. The diffused light works well here and I like the bg cloud patterns. Tfs!

fascinating note, ike ~
and a lovely detail shot of this sundial.
the architectural peelings and layers give it an appealing, other-worldly patina.
my brother went to university in heidelberg, some day i would like to see it myself.
ourania (18616) 2013-09-02 6:47
the weather was not favourable for the sundial to demonstrate its efficiency. Its design is elegant and fascinating with the astrological signs next to the roman numbers. Your composition and the mild and moody colours it features makes me think of a mysterious map. A fine close up, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

This really affirm my belief that ancient civilization were more advanced than we thought, I think they were geniuses. Not only in Europe but the Mayans and Incas in central America. Nice capture of this sundial with good details. Well done, tfs.

Your photo is a little bit mysterious and you almost get the feeling that the sundial is painted on a glass pane in front of the wall. I really enjoy this impression and I had to have a look at what is looks like in other photos. Your photo was definitively the most original of them all. TFS and have a fine week!

I was quite with golfing during weekend, so my TE activity was on 0 point.
Thank you for interesting explanation note.
I like how well you have framed this interesting sun clock. The tight framing is very good.
By the way, if you are in Europe do not miss Bratislava. Nice place to visit and enjoy. Greetings, Miro

It's really impressive how they could make something like that at that time! I didn't understand exactly how it works, but it's a beautiful detail you captured, with very good framing and colors! Excellent job!

Hi dear Ike
I'm still not back home, but just about to jump on a plane in Dublin. So "see" you in 24 hours!
You posted other photos of sun dials and as you say, they exude an ancient, secret wisdom. I love this shot, excellent reflections and plays of light. It almost looks abstract. Very artistic and an interesting subject.
jmdias (48341) 2013-11-02 8:25
nice view showing this old sun dial. I liked these lines and numbers and the graphism of the group. TFS.
