Photographer’s Note

This is the monastery "Unserer lieben Frauen" ("Our Blessed Lady") in Magdeburg on banks of Elbe river. It's one of the most important Romanesque complex of buildings in Germany.
It was founded in the year 1015 by archbishop Gero of Magdeburg and the then building here probably was a wooden one. In 1063 the construction of a basilica began and in 1129 the monastery was transferred to the new established order of Premonstratensians. In this time the building got its today shape.
In 1207 the old cathedral of Magdeburg burnt down and the here shown minster "St. Mary" temporarily was elevated to a cathedral.

In times of Reformation the monastery remained Catholic - in opposition to the surrounding city. In 1601 however the last Catholic friars left the monastery - leaving behind the bones of St. Norbert. The abbot of the monastery Strahov in Prague succeeded in carrying them over to his monastery - even during the siege of Magdeburg by imperial troops in the Thirty Year's War.

In the following centuries the monastery has had a very changeful history and in 1814 the buildings were used as a casern and hospital by French troops -and the church was used as a cattle shed ...

During World War II in 1945 the monastery was damaged by allied air attacks.

Today it is the very atmospheric municipal museum of art and concert hall of Magdeburg.

In workshop you can see the westwork of the church.
