In 1234, the city of Stralsund receives the same rights and freedoms as Rostock, and in 1294, it enters the Hanseatic League with Lübeck, Wismar, Rostock and Greifswald.
Then, the town experienced fast development as evidenced by the three Gothic churches, Santa Maria, St Nikolai and St Jacob. The parish Church St Nikolai, dedicated to sailors, is the oldest church in the city. Its construction was completed in 1627.
