Photographer's Note

Brandenburg Gate at Berlin has been photographed so very often that another image seems obsolete.

This is to remind us of those freedom loving men and women who stood up against Stalinist terror in the German Democratic Republic on June 17th, 1953.
34 of them were shot in action by East German police or Sovjet troops, seven were executed eventually. Four died in jail due to imprisonment conditions, four killed themselves while in prison, and one died of a heart attack while assaulting a police station.
What you see exceeds their finest dreams, but is reality.
