Photographer's Note

It's nearly incredible but this tavern is situated only some metres away from the centre of Berlin, from Alexanderplatz, from city hall, from the vibrant middle of Berlin.

This quarter was a present to Berlin's 750th birthday in 1987 - donated by the city to itself. This part of Berlin was nearly totally destroyed in World War II and therefore a few streets of houses have been built here with the aim to replicate the ambiance - the so called "Milieu" - of Old Berlin. The heart of this quarter is the beautiful Nikolai church - just behind the photographer (you can see it and another street in this quarter in workshop) - which at time is renovated elaborately (until Sept. 2009). It was first built in 13th century.

In 1987 this quarter of the city, called Nikolaiviertel, still was part of East Berlin and so Berliners called this new old quarter "socialistic Disneyland".

Anyway, today it's a lively and at the same time cosy and calm oasis in the very middle of Berlin-worth to be visited. You'll find there many restaurants, wine taverns, arts and crafts shops and souvenir shops.
