Photographer’s Note
After posting a little series on Brest 2008, the boat reunion, I decided to show some sites of the city, that aren't on TE yet.
Brest is renouned for its magnificent bay, but as the city was bombed to the ground during the 2nd World War, and rebuilt very quickly afterwards, most people take it as not very beautiful.
And yet, there are some beautiful, interesting sites in it.
This is the train station, which was lucky to escape the bombing. It was built in art deco from 1936 to 1937, by the architect: Urbain Cassan. He was the adviser-architect to the French railway company. The hemicycle shape of the great hall is there to remind us of the shape of the locomotive; the tower to remind us of the chimney of the locomotive.
Several people are surprised that the building dates back to 1936, because it looks very modern. Well, Cassan was a disciple of the famous visionary architect: Le Corbusier, which is probably an answer.
Brest train station has a particularity: It is the last station in Europe! You don't stop in Brest when passing by! You have to COME here; And more than one have stayed! So, it must be attractive in some ways!
If you only look at the sky! Some people pretend, it always rains in Brest, perhaps all the more because of Jacques Prévert's famous song "Souviens-toi, Barbara! Il pleuvait sans cesse sur Brest!..."
The bas-relief in pink granite is from the sculptor Lucien Brasseur and represents breton characters.
In WS, a vertical photo of the staion in B&W and a close-up on the bas-relief.
I have created a theme which according to me, represents the beauty in Brest, in its variety.

Salut MarieLouise,
an interesting piece of architecture and looking in the workshops I think you chose the best part for a pleasant view.
The noise in the sky could be easily corrected and also the tilt by the distortion, and I would prefer both to be done. Some more space on both sides is also part of my suggestion.

Neat and fresh with finely saturated colours and a lovely capture of architecture. I like the way this has been panned and taken MarieLouise

Hola Marie-Louise
Bello trabajo. Saludos cordiales, Consuelo

Hi MarieLouise,
A really great architectural shot. I am not too bothered about the tilt even if I share the view that Maurizio have done a wonderful editing job. I understand that it might have been narrow between the buildings here a that you perhaps is not even able to take a photo that looks like the edited version. Personally I would have tried to find another POV rather than editing and strightening things afterwards. TFS and have nice weekend!
Cheers,
Ulf

CiaoMarie Louise,

Bonjour MarieLouise,
thanks for sharing this interesting impression of the railway station's beautiful architecture! I am very much looking forward to further images from Brest.
I think that Ulf and Mauro really have given some helpful advices (also for me!). Nevertheless I like this building and your nice note!

Bonjour Marie Louise,
interesting building! it looks quite modern... Good choice of composition; though the crop is a bit tight. To avoid it I would have probably stepped back a bit. But maybe it was impossible... Sometimes it's not necessary to adjust the lens distortion and straighten the objects (they look a bit unnatural, then). So this one is quite OK for me :) I prefer the colour version to the desaturated version :)
best wishes,
Elena

Hello MarieLouise,
Typical 1930ties architecture, for some reason the style makes me think of Hercules Poirot, the famous Belgian detective..!
The good light helps to create a quality image tech wise, with sharp fine details and attractive natural colours...I like the framing and the intense blue sky makes a fine backdrop for the building!
Greetings,

Amicalement.

Hi MarieLouise,
This beautiful modern architecture with its striking lines and simple texture standts out brilliantly against the vivid deep blue cloudless sky.
Love the contrasting sculpture that beckons to by gone days.

Bonjour Marie-Louise,

Bien cordialement,
Emmanuel

Hi MarieLouise,
This is really nice. At first I thought it could use a bit of straightening, but after viewing the workshops, I've decided that it's better as is. Lucky indeed to have escaped the bombing.
I've been away from TE for a while, a belated Happy New Year!
Best regards,
Lamberto

Bonjour Marie-Louise,

ciao, giacomo
