WS - the full building.
Dôme des Invalides
The complex of buildings known as Les Invalides sits in Paris’s 7th arrondissement and consists of museums and monuments related to the military history of France. The most recognizable and well-known part of Les Invalides is the Dôme des Invalides, a gold-domed building now used as a burial site for a number of the country’s war heroes.
Plans to bury the remains of the Royal Family here were set aside after the death of king Louis XIV, and in 1840 king Louis-Philippe repatriated the remains of the Emperor Napoleon from st. Helena - where he was buried after his death 19 years earlier - to have Napoleon entombed here. The Dôme des Invalides now also houses the tombs of several other military leaders like Turenne, Vauban and marshall Foch.
Proposed by Louis XIV in 1670 as a home for “invalids” - disabled and impoverished war veterans, Les Invalides was designed by Libéral Bruant and completed in 1676.
That same year King Louis XIV - the Sun King - charged architect Jules Hardouin Mansart with the task of creating a separate private chapel at the Invalides for exclusive use of the royal family. It is this gold-domed church, completed in 1708 by de Cotte after Mansart died, that many individuals recognize. Inspired by Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica, this chapel, known as Église du Dôme, is considered one of the world’s most exciting examples of French Baroque architecture.
The dome itself is 107 meters high (351 ft), making it one of the tallest monuments in Paris, and was centrally placed in order to dominate the court of honor – one of 15 courtyards at the complex, designed for military parades. The inside of the dome was painted by Charles de La Fosse, disciple of 18th century well-known French painter, Charles Le Brun.

Les dorures de ce dôme ont toujours un bel éclat sous un ciel bleu comme c'est le cas ici avec une très bonne netteté.

Hi dear George, my neighbour !
Great pov ! Amazing compo with the dome and the plane, at right corner. Both climbing up towards the sky.
Very nice dark blue sky builds up a perfect background and gives life to all the nice archtiectorial elements.
Very good notes as well.
TSF and best regards

A great capture of this lovely dome with its golden decorations that contrast well with the polarised sky. Superb clarity to bring out the least detail.

George, great shot, interesting that looking up so far at such a large dome would produce such color and detail. The sky and the jet cap it nicely.

the golden glance in the light is wonderful, with its contrast of the whole roof against the sky well balanced in light. The airplane is a top bonus detail.

eccellente primo piano della cupola di questa chiesa.
Il cielo blu ne fa da ottimo sfondo, movimentato dal passaggio del Jumbo!

Hi George, I saw this passing randomly through your Gallery and marvelled at it. And how could I have missed it!? I love this close-up: the detail is wondeful, the sky beautifully underexposed and the icing on the cake is the aeroplane flying by. Great job, one of your (many) best! Warm regards, Lisa PS: I hope your Christmas was a beautiful one.

Hi George, I love your brilliant composition in this excellent photo, the crop of the dome & the cross reaching into that superb sky works splendidly, the gorgeous gold offers a rich feel & the finish is the plane passing through, TFS, kind regards Wilson.
