*Père Lachaise* Photo

Photographer’s Note

During my visit to Paris in march i had some time
(about 2.5 hours) to walk around Père-Lachaise
Cemetery and take a few (100+) photos.

Of course i bought a small map and looked for the
"celebreties" and found most of them (like Balzac,
Chopin, Rossini, Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde,
Proust, Marcel Marceau).

Père-Lachaise Cemetery is with 48ha the largest
cemetery in the city of Paris, although there are
larger cemeteries in Paris suburbs.

Père-Lachaise is one of the most famous cemeteries in
the world. Located in the 20e arrondissement, it is
reputed to be the world's most-visited cemetery,
attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually
to the graves of those who have enhanced French life
over the past 200 years. It is also the site of three
Great War memorials.

Père-Lachaise is located on Boulevard de Ménilmontant.
Métro station Philippe Auguste on line 2 is next to the
main entrance, while the station called Père Lachaise,
on lines 2 or 3, is 500 metres away near a side
entrance.

The cemetery takes its name from Père François de la
Chaise (1624-1709), confessor to Louis XIV, who lived
in the Jesuit house rebuilt in 1682 on the site of the
chapel. The property, situated on the hillside from
which the king, during the Fronde, watched skirmishing
between the Condé and Turenne, was bought by the city
in 1804, laid out by Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, and
later extended. The cemetery was established by
Napoleon in 1804.

Hallo Thorsten,
Die vier grossen Friedhoefe von Paris sind auch meine "Liebelingsecken" ! So paradaox es auch klingen mag, wenn man ein Fuehrer und Karte mit hat, kann man fast die gesamte intellektuelle Welt des fruehen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert verfolgen. Ob Poeten oder Politiker; Schauspieler oder Filmemacher; Schlagersaenger oder Wissenschaftler ! Alles zu sehen und zu treffen. Sogar unser Ururopa der Photograph Nadar liegt dort.
Hier dieser Beitrag ist bestens gelungen. Mit dem guten Blickwinkel und Compo. Schwarz Weiss war auch die richtige Entscheidung. Auch tolle sehr gute Info's. Kurzum ein gelungenes Beitrag.

Hallo Thorsten!
So etwas habe ich noch nie gesehen. Ineressant und eindrucksvoll! Das Ganze erscheint ja sehr pompös und aufwändig. Ein tolles - und nicht alltägliches - Foto mit einer beeindruckenden Perspektive!

Hello Thorsten.
I too spent some hours in this amazing cemetery, a couple of years ago. You have presented a really good b/w image of this curving path between the graves. Your shot has an appropriately sombre darkness and contrast, and excellent perspective effect. The many verticals are pleasing to the eye, and so is the light falling on the stones of the pathway. A very good composition and powerful picture.

Curve of road and its slope creates a splendid scene with facades of tombs. Cobblestoned path, excellent chosen of B&W medium makes your photo an attractive one. Congratulations.

Hallo Thorsten. Heute ein Photo in Schwarzweiß. Es ist ausdruckstark und sehenswert. Das Motiv wirkt wie eine kleine Straße mit Häusern. Zusätzlich beantwortet es mir eine Frage, die ich mir vor ein paar Tagen gestellt haben: darf man den Friedhof besuchen oder ist er für Touristen gesperrt. Das hat sich nun geklärt. DEar Thorsen, I added some of your foggy photos from Köln to my theme 'Mystic Mist'. But now I found what I really searched for a really though composition from the world-famed Pere Lachaise. BW emphasizes the lights and shadows and makes the photo more dramatic. MAny thanks for sharing, Jalab

Very good mono shot, nice lead in with the path taking you through the photo, I wondered if a sepia tone would enhance the timeless feel

Hallo,

ein wirklich sehr schönes Bild zu dem das S/W sehr gut passt. Eigentlich weiß ich gar nicht, was man hier hätte besser machen können. Gut finde ich auch, dass man auf der rechten Seite die Gräber sieht und du nicht nur die linke Seite samt Straße ins Bild gebracht hast.
