We love Velib? Photo

Photographer’s Note

A somehow experimental, minimalistic picture today...
The Paris Mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, launched a scheme called Velib. It is a bicycle rental system aimed at diminishing trafic congestion and suposedly reducing CO2 emissions and therefore, global warming... I was trying to get an original composition of the bycicle stand, when a couple came walking, holding each other hands, with the sun almost right in front of me... their shade added the desired 'touch'...
If I see the rates in the linked web page... it doesn't sound very appealing for someone, like me living in countries with reasonable prices!
This is also my contribution to Valentine's day!

Aujourd'hui, une photo un peu expérimentale et minimaliste...
Les Français connaissent tous le Velib, je n'ai donc pas besoin de préciser! Je cherchais une manière un peu originale de présenter ces vélos, quand je vis ce couple s'avancer vers moi dans le soleil hivernal... leur ombre m'a procuré ce que je recherchais!
Je ne suis pas au courant des prix, mais en consultant la page de Wilipedia en Anglais en lien ci-dessus, j'ai eu la surprise de voir le tarif de 20 heures pour 151 euros... dites moi qu'ils se trompent!!! La ou je vis, on peut acheter une dizaine de bicyclettes pour cette somme!
C'est aussi ma contribution a la Saint Valentin, et je veux dedier cette photo a Marilyn, ma fidèle compagne depuis un quart de siècle!

Very very nice !!!! I Love the repitition of the Back wheels of the Bicycles but what really makes this photo work are the SHADOWS of the people in the upper right hand of the photo and the empty space in the lower right. Beautiful Composition

Salut Laurent,

I think is a great idea to increase the use of more natural means of transportation. Is not only good for traffic but also for the environment. Interesting image with just the rear ends showing here. There is a nice balance of light and the shadows of the people add a nice touch to the view. Thanks.

A nice composition, divided in two well defined parts.
Then the two shadows (linked by their hands) give a special touch. Interesting picture.

Et toi, es tu un adepte du velib? :))Ils sont bien placés et j'aime bien l'impact visuel des roues en C/J au bord du trottoir inondé d'une belle lumière, qui fait bien ressortir les ombres du couple se tenant par la main formant un V.

Yeah, I noticed those bicycles in Paris too, but didn't try them. Excellent photo with a great composition, nice repetition of all the Velibs. The shadows of the couple is an excellent inclusion and very suitable one day ahead of Valentine's Day. Thanks a lot for sharing!

the shot was captured the bicycle rental system , with very nice graphistic way and at the some time a minimalistic one.The perspective and the POV is nice chosen and give depth of field and make your capture 'particular'. The colours and the light are nice.The shadows of the passing bye couple, add a nice stroke in the image. Informative your note too.Congratulations.

It sorted out very good, this abstract experiment of yours. I agree with you that the shadows add a very nice touch, visual and mood wise. The graphism and the light are great.
The prices are indeed exorbitant! 150 € for 20h?!!! With that money one can rent a car for 2 or 3 days or buy one or even two bikes!

Excellente composition.
L'ombre de ce couple est parfaitement disposée et te permet de donner une jolie touche de légèreté à ces vélos, dont l'utilité est incontestable. Quant au prix... n'y avait-il pas une virgule???

Here we have something similar like this called "Bicing". The idea is the same as yours.

The compo, with that couple is great. Makes the picture different.

Petite touche très subtile et bien dosée. Tu suggères l'amour avec une ombre. C'est bien plus efficace de que d'étaler une scène trop suggestive ;-)

Quant aux "vélib", je pense aussi que tu as dû faire une erreur, je crois qu'il s'agit de 29 euros par an + la location du vélo.

Excellent portrayal of a simple scene. The shadows are the highlight, definitely. Diagonal placement of the bikes, the low light is very used. Heard about this from a colleague in Paris..he's already using a bicycle! Very good work!

Tu l'auras compris, j'aime bien le concept et le "sujet". Je trouve que tu l'as bien composé et la mise en scène minimale et un peu abtraite est bien. Et en plus, ce n'est pas dans tes ambiances usuelles, donc cela donne encore plus de valeur.

Olá Laurent, what a smart compo you have here. The repetition effect and those two shadows on the corner make a great picture and the light is superb. Yes, I love Velib - these bikes were the best thing that Paris did lately and I even used them, returning home at 4:00am when I didn't manage to get a free taxi - it was so much fun.
