Photographer’s Note

Anne de Bretagne, (1477-1514) was the heiress to François II, the Duke of Bretagne who first tried to maintain Breton independence by a marriage alliance with the Holy Roman Empire. This however, provoked France to crush the alliance, restore Bretagne and marry Anne to Charles VIII. She was crowned Queen of France in 1492.

This statue stands outside the gates to the castle in Nantes, the birthplace of Anne de Bretagne.
