Symbol of the town of Cahors, the Pont Valentré is one of the most beautiful and the best preserved European medieval bridges. It is a rare example of the French military architecture of the Middle Age.
This bridge is very impressive: with its six Gothic arches and its three square towers, it rises with 40 meters above the level of water.
Its construction began in 1308, and the bridge was finished in 1378 after, according to the legend, the intervention of the devil.
The legend tells that the architect, to finish his work, concluded a pact with Satan. It found a trick to save its soul right before the end of work. The devil who was therefore angry made impossible to finish the Bridge and each night took the last stone away the central tower.
At the time of the restoration in 1879 a carved stone representing the demon hopelessly hung, was installed in the empty site.
