65- Breton draft horses Photo

Photographer’s Note

The Breton draft horse is famous for its sturdiness. It gradually stopped being used on farms, during the 1950's, as it was replaced by tractors and cars! Yes, the draft horse was used for farm work and for travelling , when they were harnessed to horse-drawn carriages.
My grandmother was an expert at driving such a carriage, and she used to take her grandchildren, visiting friends and family, with pride.
Then, when the last horse left the farm, it was too late for her to learn how to drive an automobile, and she suffered very much from her loss of independence!
The draft horse was nearly forgotten for a while, apart from a few die-hards, who carried on breeding them out of passion for horses, but they are back in force now, as more people have taken a passion in their breeding, and more land is available for keeping them on.

Hi ML,

nice, those three draft horses and their owner! Also in the area, where I live, horses were used to draw the empty rafts, which transported salt, upstream. Good to see that the Bretons don´t forget their traditions.

The depth of the photo is excellent, good sharpness, well done!

Je me réjouis de savoir que nos chevaux de traits Bretons connaissent une nouvelle jeunesse. Je savais que les haras d'Hennebont faisait un gros travail pour sauver la race, mais il est bon de savoir qu'on les réutilise pour des taches quotidienne.
Beau travail avec un excellent ws comme d'habitude

Ton image me fait très plaisir. Dans ma jeunesse, j'ai pu voir les chevaux encore très utilisés en Anjou et Poitou. Je me souviens de ces montagnes de muscles dociles et soumises. Je me souviens des bruits et odeurs qui accompagnaient leur travail. C'est un vrai plaisir de les voir renaître. Très belle image où se mêlent beauté, élégance et puissance. Bravo.

What an engaging note, accompanying this unusual photograph, I have never seen a set of three draft horses working as a team, but what power they must generate! Certainly much more than three horsepower. The composition, colors and resolution are all first rate.

lovely portrait of those three at work from the right POV. A bit tight framing. Wonderful colour and texture to show their colouration. We had less usage of such horses in the farming (in my time), but still today some work as they are named in Germany. We call them brewery horses (Brauereipferde), as they were used for the traction of waggons to deliver the beer to the pubs. And they are back in the woods as your capture shows to tug the wood because of the less damage to the forests.

En ce qui concerne le principe de trois, c'est conforme à la règle!
Il est même étonnant de constater que chacun porte son poids sur le même pied avant et arrière!

Excuse moi pour écrire en Anglais, je suis un peu paresseux pour le faire en Français aujourd'hui. :-)

Like many of your other posts of your region, it looks much like a "just a snapshot" on the first quick look, which is necessarily a flaw, because it is very nice to look at and very effective documentary wise. However, a more careful look lead us concluding that the "quick snapshot" appearance only derives from the simplicity of the compo, which is actually very effective and well done.

Did I mention that the horses are beautiful and that their conductor rather picturesque?

Sharpness of the bg, namely on the man isn't perfect and colours are a bit pale, but I guess that can have something to do with the light.

As usual, the WS's are a useful complement to the main post.

I have noticed before you sending images that were already posted. I have nothing against that, but maybe it is simpler to just write a link to the original post or WS. On the case of the WS1, you could have written something like "<a href='http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/France/photo462251.htm'>my 5th post</a>", which would render "my 5th post".

Très belle brochette. Superbes ces chevaux et présentés dans un excellent cadrage...
Un peu dommage le look du "cow boy" qui ne fait pas très couleur locale mais ceci n'enlève rien à la qualité de la photo, qui tire un très bon parti de cette tâche rouge.

Débardage, j'ai vu cette opération recemment dans un endroit difficile d'accès pour evacuer des coupes autour de mon Viaduc préféré ( Pourrhis à Etables sur mer ).
La photo est bonne et même si c'est dans une fête, toute la puissance et le coté rustique du "trait breton" ressort.
Le conducteur a aussi une "bonne gueule".

Superb shot. I love the way those three draft horses fill up the whole frame. The inclusion of the man with his red shirt that brings colour to the photo is also very nice . Excellent sharpness and very nice naturual colours. TFS.

Que du bonheur en voyant cette prise de vue. Cela nous replonge dans une époque révolue où les chevaux avaient leur place. Les 4 x 4 ont remplacé ces bêtes, il faut reconnaître que cela n'a pas le même charme (je suis d'accord qu'il faut vivre avec son temps).

estos caballos son impresionantes, se ven muy fuertes y nobles, y supongo que debían ser una gran ayuda en el trabajo en las granjas hasta ser substituídos por los tractores.
Perfecto encuadre un poco descentrado en tu composición, con los hombres a un lado y la gente al fondo.
Buen trabajo de divulgación de las tradiciones bretonas.

Hello Marie. Thanks for your critique. I've enjoyed looking at your shots of Bretagne. This one looks fantastic. The composition is superb, with the horses making a diagonal and the brightly dressed man behind, giving the photo real depth. I like the close cropping, it gives the picture a sense of dynamism and strength. The horses are so clearly presented; they look so healthy. I find the colour and light to be very natural looking.
The map link does not seem to point to the right place at all, but I found Plougastel-Daoulas in Finisterre, not far from Brest. I presume that is the right place. For some reason the WS will not open for me.

Ta photo me fait penser qu'il faudra que j'aille au prochain salon du cheval, il y a longtemps que je n'y suis pas allé... Et j'en découvrirai d'autres de ces beaux traits bretons. Des boules de muscles qui travaillent pourtant en douceur. Belle et intéressante photo que la tienne qui nous montre ici l'utilité de ces animaux là où ne peuvent pas passer bull et autres engins mécaniques.

Beautiful capture of these noble beast as they labor as in days of old when they did all the heavy work on the farm. They are seen in very clear color and wonderful detail. I'm sure their heavy hoofs make a very clear din on the road as they proudly pass.

Ils devaient en faire des dégâts ces chevaux dans les serres de fraises de Plougastel... ;-) Un beau portrait groupé ici sur ces 3 spécimens et en même temps un bon dynamisme sur la photo. Un évènement qui doit être sympa avc de belles photos à faire comme celle-ci, et dire que je ne met les pieds à Plougastel que pour faire du VTT sur les spendides (et difficiles) piste de la presqu'ile...

che bella foto nitida e chiara!
I cavalli bretoni danno un senso di possanza e di infaticabili lavoratori che bene collaborano con l'uomo.
Mi piace che attraverso le tue foto contribuisci a conservare le tradizioni popolari.
Io in questa stagione estiva ho abbandonato un po' le sagre folk e festivals per fare un po' di reportage.
Ho visitato qui a Cagliari, dove abito, la nave da crociera più grande del mondo "Independence of the seas" british come il Titanic.
Alcune foto le ho postate su TE.
Se hai tempo guardale e forse verrà anche a te la voglia di farti una crociera con tuo marito visitando anche la città di Cagliari in Sardegna dove appunto abito.
