Photographer’s Note

A painted doorway in Roussillon, Provence, France

Scene
This is a painted doorway in the little village of Roussillon. Roussillon is near Gordes the city Peter Mayle wrote about in his book "A Year in Provence." This is a subregion of Provence called The Luberon. This is the little village that my wife and I called home for a our week in Provence. It is centrally located which made for easy travel throughout the region.

Background
I did a quick Internet search today regarding this painting but I could not find anything about it. I remember reading somewhere when planning for the trip that this was painted to commemorate a significant event in the French Revolution.

Roussillon is noted for the ochre sands that are mined on the edge of the village. For a century this has been the source of the ochre color that painters have used in their artwork. The sands are still mined and art paints are still fabricated in and around the village.
