The weekly market day in Arles, Provence, France

The Scene
This is one of the many flower stall in the market. This was captured in mid May and the local flowers are in bloom. From what I understand a proper Provençal dinner table always has fresh flowers.

Background
My wife and I were staying in Avignon and decided on Saturday morning to take train to Arles to visit the Roman Arena and walk the streets Van Gogh made famous 100 years ago. To our surprise the local market day fas in full swing below the arena. The market stalls carry almost everything a good US or UK supermarket carries but here there is interaction between the vendor and customer. There were many food stalls cooking up North African (Algerian), Spanish, and Provençal dishes and the aromas were heavenly. Something the nose does not forget. My wife purchased some Provençal table linens for my mother and herself and had a wonderful selecting the objects and bantering and even bartering with the vendor. This made the objects much more valuable to my wife and my mother when we described the day to her. We discovered in the week we motored around Provence how important market day is to the locals. We got involved with a local market almost everyday we had a car.

Excellent picture you have here. I really like those two hands which charge the picture with a strong sense of friendship. Well done.

Hi John,

I like this picture, a little busy but it works and reflects well the french markts which are very livelly. As Antonio I also felt atracted by the hands, they're really the eye catch here.

Best Regards,

Flavia

Hi John,
You did an excellent job of composing this photo in a crowded, chaotic environment like this. Taking photographs in this type of environment is very challenging and it requires patience. That is why this type of photo is not one of the more popular themes. I think that you included in your composition exactly what you needed to: no more, no less. Good idea to use fill-flash and to show the hands exchanging money to show human interaction. You did a fine job on this one!

Hi John,
It seems that your talent is not limited to landscape and architecture. :-)
It's a vivid capture of the life of this colourful market.
Regards, José.

Hi John,
Good contrast, attractive color shoot, various color of flowers and people hair, good pov to show the business here.

Very good market shot John. Taken from the end of the stall like this has given the image a good depth. Good timing too just as money is about to change hands.

Hi John,
A tight crop, but because of that a very interesting scene. There is even some depth in it created by the layers of flowers and the people waiting in line.
Color handling is more then oaky, just as the presentation.
Good work..!!
Regards, Henk

Hi John,
This is a particularly well-framed market scene with the goods and buyers under umbrellas which avoids harsh glare but may have required some of your expertise top avoid any hint of a greenish-cast.

I think market scenes teach us a lot about the world and I agree that street markets are WAY more user-friendly; so I'm currently collecting them. I added your to the theme as well; do let me know if you prefer that I remove it.
HLJ, Pat
