Photographer's Note

This is the silent retreat of St. Martin du Canigou. Its beauty and setting more than repay the steep 40min climb it took to get there. In 1007 a French Count founded the monastery on a peak in the eastern Pyrenees, near the Spanish border.

He founded the monastery in expiation of the murder of his son, and installed in it a community of Benedictine monks who were anxious to get away from the world. At present a religious lay community, of both men and women, live in the monastery and welcome visitors there.
