Photographer’s Note

This shot was taken near the abbey of Hautvilliers. I wanted to capture the beauty of the vinyards, on a hill near the Marne river. What I wanted to show particularly is the natural shape of the river.

Dom Pérignon (1639-1715), responsible for the Hautvilliers abbey, found the five major elements of the Champagne wine :
- the gathering of grape of different origins to make the vintage,
- the quick and fragmented pressing of the grape,
- the use of bottles made of thick glass to preserve the wine and maintain the bubbles,
- the use of a cork wrapped up in a seal bearing the arms of the abbey,
- cellar dug in the chalk so as to assure the ageins of the wines at a constant temperature.

I cropped the picture into a square to emphasize the shape of the river and to set the little house in the bottom left corner. The elements shown in the landscape frame were not interesting (may be I should have chosen another point of view...). I added +10 to the master saturation, and +10 to the red and yellow saturation. I tuned the levels, particularly the input level (from 0 to 5) and the output level (from 255 to 233). I increased the contrast by modifying the curves (I added two points, the first 61-51, the second 191-201). I finally used a contrast mask (duplicate layer, desaturate, invert, gaussian blur with radius 10 pix), which I used with the mode "color burn" and the opacity 50%.
I added the black frame.
I finally flattened the layers, resized it to the TE limits and used Luko's script.

Cette photo a été prise près de l'abbaye de Hautvilliers. Je voulais capturer la beauté des vignes, depuis une colline près de la Marne. Je voulais montrer en particulier la forme naturelle du fleuve.

Dom Pérignon (1639-1715), intendant de l'abbaye de Hautvilliers, trouva les 5 éléments majeurs du Champagne :
- l'assemblage de raisins de différents cépages pour l'assemblage,
- la pression rapide, et par étapes, du raisin,
- l'utilisation de bouteilles faites de verre épais pour préserver le vin et maintenir les bulles,
- l'utilisation d'un bouchon de liège enveloppé d'un scellé marqué aux armes de l'abbaye,
- la cave creusée dans la craie pour assurer la conservation du vin à température constante.

J'ai recadré l'image et choisi un format carré pour souligner la forme du fleuve et placer la petite maison dans le coin en bas à gauche. Les éléments apparaissant dans le format paysage n'étaient pas intéressants (peut-être aurais-je dû choisir un autre point de vue...).

Belle composition avec cette pente douce dans les vignes qui aboutit à la Marne qui serpente en contrebas. Le résultat de toutes ces manipulations de couleurs est une dominante verte et jaune sur des tons chauds. Il serait utile de voir l'image originale pour mieux comprendre l'intérêt et le plus de ces transformations.

Bonjour Michel, very nice picture of this meandering river, all so beautifully framed by the bushes and the trees. The lines of the paths lead us so nicely through the picture, and the strogn green field on the right is very nicely divided into pieces because of those tractor lines.

C'est une jolie vue, j'apprecie la tres bonne luminosite et la bonne profondeur apportee par la riviere. Les couleurs sont tres belles et le travail de PP me parait excellent, je me demande juste ce qu'est cette ligne brillante a droite de la maisonnette ? Comme Regis, j'apprecierai beaucoup de pouvoir comparer ce resultat avec la photo originale, il est possible de la poster en atelier (WS).

Un riche paysage qui me rappelle un coin de Touraine.
La composition est parfaitement agencée, mais je note que l'encadrement à tendance à réduire le format du paysage et la définition; entre nous je préfère avoir plein la vue.
Il est donc possible de diminuer son épaisseur.

I like your selection of subject and background here. The vineyards provide foreground detail, while the river and village give some perspective and background interest. Nice.

Le PP fait parfois des merveilles et cette vue colorée et bien cadrée a beaucoup de charme ainsi transformée.
Je trouve néanmoins que le WS avec ses couleurs plus naturelles et plus douces ainsi que son ciel un peu tourmenté est aussi un excellent cliché.
Bon travail et bon résultat.

Excellents acuité, couleur et éclairage. Je peux lire le signe d''Joseph Perrier '. Une scène rurale attrayante, avec bon persective normal, facilité par le jet de méandre. Bon travail !

Très belle photo que tu nous présente ici.
J'aime particulièrement la compo, avec un bon premier plan et la marne dans la partie haute de l'image qui remonte sur le village.
La lumière est belle, et très bon rendu des détails aussi!

Salut Michael,
De chaudes couleurs sur les collines marnaises.
Une focale un peu longue qui rappoche la rivière des vignes, union sacrée de l'eau et de la terre.
C'est beau. Le tout accompagné d'une note explicite (mais en Aglais seulement !).
Mon seul regret va au format carré que je n'aime pas.

un succes bien merite pour cette belle image, moi ce que j'aime le plus c'est ce detail qui tue " Vignobles Joseph Perrier" ;o) incrit presqu'en plein milieu de ta compo et entoure de champs, de vignes et meme d'eau.
C'est complet et reussi.

You say you should have chosen another POV... well, I just can't imagine a better one for this one is perfect.
The colors are well balanced on the two banks of the river which makes the picture somehow symetric. The result is very good.
You've succeded in showing the beauty of the french vineyards in the foreground of the picture. The Joseph Perrier sign is well placed in the picture too , counterbalancing the little house at the left.
Your careful PP gave a final artist touch to this masterpiece. No doubt your best one so far posted.
Suggest that you open a Don Pérignon 55 to celebrate ! :)

I like the depht in this landscape created with a big foreplan and taking us along the curving river along that fine detailed village, perfectly sharp, you can read easily from who this vinyard is, very well done.

Un point de vue spectaculaire que tu n'as pas raté, il permet de suivre les méandres de cette rivière. Des teintes naturelles et nullement forcées, un joli hommage à un ble endroit.

Your shot is exactly what your note says, and more. Your framing is judiciously judged, and to me, here is excatly what I mean when i say a landscape is also a portrait. A portrait of France, which awakes feelings as if our beautiful land was a person. Especially, as the work of man is to be seen all around, in harmony with the meandering curves of the river.

Je ne vais pas être très original après tous ces commentaires déjà écrits. Je trouve que c'est particulièrement intéressant d'avoir le cliché original. Cela permet de mettre en valeur les retouches et le recadrage qui ont nettement amélioré une photo qui était déjà bonne au départ. Très bon regard sur cette belle vallée de la Marne. Amicalement,
