Photographer’s Note

The four arches and the vault which one can currently see are the vestiges of a bridge who comprised 22 arches, measured more than 900 meters, and which knew many vicissitudes. Il is probable that in the beginning, a bridge, whose memory was lost, had been built at the time Roman. In 1177, the base of the ancient piles was useful of sitted with new piles of stones surmounted by an apron of wood. The construction of the new bridge was fast, since in January 1186 one established the rights to perceive on the goods while crossing it. For a city in full rise, economic utility of a bridge - only, at that time, which existed on the Rhone, between Lyon and the sea was obvious. The bridge of Bénezet was supplemented by the construction of a vault on one of the piles where Bénezet was buried. The bridge itself, ridges some with the violent risings of the Rhone, suffered constantly from damage and was altered and repaired with large expenses until 1668. Then one renonça to repair it; its arches disappeared gradually.
The famous song On the bridge of Avignon... which one does not know the origin, was popularized by Adolphe Adam who in gave the melody to the honor in his operetta the Deaf person or the full Inn in 1853.
