Fontevraud Abbey was founded in 1100 and was a double monastery, with both monks and nuns on the same site. Robert of Arbrissel declared that the leader of the order should always be a woman and appointed Petronille de Chemillé as the first abbess. She was succeeded by Matilda of Anjou, the aunt of Henry II of England. This was the start of a position that attracted many rich and noble abbesses over the years, including members of the French Bourbon royal family. It also became a refuge for battered women and penitent prostitutes, and housed a leper hospital and a home for aged religious. During the French Revolution, the order was dissolved. The abbey later became a prison from 1804 to 1963. Prisoners–men, women and children–began arriving in 1814. Eventually, it held some 2,000 prisoners, earning the prison the "toughest in France after Clairvaux." Political prisoners experienced the harshest conditions: some French Resistance prisoners were shot there under the Vichy Government. Following closure of the prison came major restoration, an opening to the public in 1985, and completion of the abbey church's restoration in 2006 under architect Lucien Magne. The abbey was originally the site of the graves of King Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, their son King Richard I of England, their daughter Joan, their grandson Raymond VII of Toulouse, and Isabella of Angoulême, wife of Henry and Eleanor's son King John. However, there is no remaining corporal presence of Henry, Eleanor, Richard, or the others on the site. Their remains were possibly destroyed during the French Revolution. (Taken from Wikipedia).
I found the history of this one of most impressive abbeys in France very interesting so I went to see it. In one of the old halls there was this modern installation. I do not know its meaning but it seems good subject of a photo, for me rather unusual.
Other view, more general, as Workshop.

I too do not understand what this is, but it is definitely a good subject for colour, repeating patterns and stark contrast with the black BG. Well seen and well taken, thanks for sharing.

Most unusual this artwork that seems to consist of hanging coloured glass rods. Anyway, the rich red tones look superb against the darkened background and make for an excellent graphical composition. Thanks for sharing. I wish you a pleasant Sunday.

are you sure you're Malgo? Looks like you're doing an imitation of CLODO :)
as much as I love/appreciate/admire Modern architecture, I really do not enjoy Modern Art!
Its often very weird, very strange, very over-the-top, and most people don't understand the meaning behing it.
as you say, its great for a photo, love the contrast and bright colors mixed with the darks.
When I visited the Guggenheim in NYC, they had modern art on display. and here is an example of what i mean by weird and just downright stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!
One 'Artist' had an entire room empty, with one Rock placed in the middle - thats it - 1 rock in an empty room.
Are you SERIOUS!!!!!????? and the artist take themselves so seriously, thinking that they have some special 'gift'
anyways, have a great day
rigoletto (34279) 2014-01-26 2:35
yes, are you sure you are malgo? :))
well well well, here is another artwork photo that makes my day. seriously, you know how to do it, and i know, you just seldom want to do it...

ottima fotografia che trasforma sapientemente in un disegno astratto un soggetto della vita reale.
Una ottima intuizione sviluppata molto bene.
Ciao e buona domenica

Like Craig, I've already seen modern art where I can afford only very little interest for. Of course I'd have to see this work first in reality before I can form an opinion. However, your picture is already working appealing.
I guess you took your picture from the best angle. Anyway, the composition is excellent and the red/black contrast strong and attractive.
You also took care of a beautiful fitting frame.
Best regards, Paul

J'ai eu le plaisir de visiter l'abbaye de Fontevraud, mais je n'ai pas vue cette belle oeuvre de lumière rouge en forme de vague, très photogénique. Une très belle composition très bien rendue.

Oooh I like this a lot. So minimalist, so beautifully composed and illuminated. I'm usually not a fan of big frames, but the black and orange frame here work beautifully. Excellent work, thanks for sharing and my mamma sends you a big hug.
Hugs from me too

Very artistic form, this is a beautiful composition. I appreciate the WS picture so I could understand what this really is. A well taken picture!

I really agree, this installation of art has made a superb photo, this is an intriguing and abstract image. One I would never guess to be an ancient abbey either! The colors are beautiful, and your excellent choice of framing brings those colors out in a superb way. Fascinating capture, thanks as always.

Hi Maslgo - I was about to comment on another of your shots when I saw this one.... What a fine and unusual image. I think the graphic lines are beautifully captured here, you project a strong sense of movement with your excellent composition. Well done you! warm regards Rosemary

A modern composition very bus that especially surprised to find at a place like this Romanesque abbey, it seems to me like a lamp, which provides a fabulous graphic to the composition.
Very good management of both the brightness and the sharpness.
The color is great, very well balanced.
Very well done. I love
I wish you a happy start to the week.

Super management and presentation of this modern lighted Art. Very interesting but a bit odd it being exhibited in a old monastery.
When are we going to see some post of all this snow you guys have?
Have a nice Monday.

Looks like staircase, which you like to photograph. So even it is not a staircase this artwork serves the purpose. So you are Emka :))

This is very cool, I love it. Very retro and modern. The repeating red light lead our eyes in and following it around the composition. A very nice abstract piece.
ktanska (29017) 2014-01-28 5:42
Very special light installation. Hot red goes well with overall darkness. And you gave a good framing to this too. I would love to see this in 3D!
SWEETFREEDOM (24621) 2014-01-28 6:36
an interesting picture, good exposure and colors.
worldcitizen (9320) 2014-01-28 15:47
This is a nice combination of old and new. The red color really stands out against the dark interior, and I like the way the lights snake through the frame. The WS is also very interesting, with those small boats under the red lights. Very nice crop and framing. I like that we can see some small dots of lights surrounding the main installation.

Seems a very good idea and the red colour really stands out and gives a very nice effect. It makes the abbey really different, I believe.
