The center of the Place de la Concorde in Paris is occupied by a giant Egyptian obelisk decorated with hieroglyphics exalting the reign of the pharaoh Ramesses II. It is one of two the Egyptian government gave to the French in the 19th century. The other one stayed in Egypt, too difficult and heavy to move to France with the technology at that time.
The obelisk once marked the entrance to the Luxor Temple. The Ottoman viceroy of Egypt, Mehmet Ali, offered the 3,300-year-old Luxor Obelisk to France in 1829. It arrived in Paris on 21 December 1833. Three years later, on 25 October 1836, King Louis Philippe had it placed in the center of Place de la Concorde, where a guillotine used to stand during the Revolution.
The obelisk, a yellow granite column, rises 23 metres high, including the base. Given the technical limitations of the day, transporting it was no easy feat — on the pedestal are drawn diagrams explaining the machinery that was used for the transportation. The obelisk is flanked on both sides by fountains constructed at the time of its erection on the Place.
Missing its original cap, believed stolen in the 6th century BC, the government of France added a gold-leafed pyramid cap to the top of the obelisk in 1998. Source: Wikipedia

Sono senza parole, continuo ad ammirare queste due torri così diverse e così uguali, che uniscono l'antico e il moderno in una unica soluzione, impregnate della luce dorata in questo momento magico.
I miei complimenti.

Bonjour, chère Gosia,
Je crois bien que c'est la première fois que je vois côte à côte la Tour Eiffel et l'obélisque !
De plus, cette vue nocturne est de toute beauté.

What a fine blue hour shot!
You have captured this scene, with its artificial lights, to perfection.
I just love how the obelisk appears to be glowing, sending its hierglyphical message out to the world!
Your composition is exquisite. The obelisk makes a natural connection with the Eiffel Tower.
Have a great Sunday,

I love this shot. The obelisk, the tower and the surrounding area are so beautifully illuminated. A very sharp picture and a dramatic blue sky. I also like the detail such as the two men standing together on the kerb.
Kind Regards, Ann

Ciao e buona domenica

A splendid blue hour composition presenting two Parisian icons for the price of one:-) Cleverly framed and expertly exposed. I like the presence of the people, who animate the scene and offer a sense of scale. Great colours and clarity. Excellent night photography.

hi gosia. as far as i've seen, this is a very rare angle from paris. it is like "two towers" from middle earth. excellent sharpness for 1/15 hand held.
ourania (21414) 2013-11-24 2:16
your point of view and composition are excellent and your skillfull management of exposure and contrast has resulted in a gorgeous photo with lasting allure. I like very much the balanced view of this superb city scape, the interaction between warm and cold tones, the attractive luminosity of both. I also like the sense of depth and how you froze the people's movement making the scene look so calm and natural. Exceptional work, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great Sunday,

J'aime beaucoup le point de vue sur l'obélisque qui pousse le regard aussi loin que la tour Eiffel au loin. La gestion de la lumière est superbe à l'heure bleue. Une image profonde et nette.
mirosu (10128) 2013-11-24 5:33
Outstanding blue-hour photo. The obelisk is excellently captured from very well selected viewpoint. The view from lover angle makes the obelisk majestic and dominant. The lighting is perfect, the contrast against dark sky excellent. Well done.
SnapRJW (26074) 2013-11-24 7:13
Hello Gosia - The relationship between the obelisk and the tower is really well balanced here creating an good diagonal across the frame. I am really impressed by your light management here, all the hieroglyphics are clearly visible and that must take some doing under light like this. Super shot where the colours contrast beautifully. Warm regards Rosemary
Noel_Byrne (16171) 2013-11-24 9:05
This is a superb composition, really beautiful. The lights of both the obelisk and the Eiffel tower stand out so wonderfully against the blue light of the sky, and you managed to capture this so perfectly crystal sharp. A fascinating scene (the obelisk is really a treasure) and a perfect photo of it.
Thanks as always
PaulVDV (18692) 2013-11-24 9:40
This is a great sight of the Egyptian obelisk with the Eiffel Tower on the background, both beautifully illuminated in a golden colour making them stand out strongly at the blue hour.
The hieroglyphs look so beautiful with this illumination.
Wonderful sky in light and dark blue shades.
Best regards, Paul
macjake (48333) 2013-11-24 12:33
do you know what part of the scene I enjoy the most? haha
its actually the man standing in the dark suite with the umbrella striking the ground like a stake!
and its great how perspectives can change as of course we know the Eiffel Tower is taller than the Obelisk.
love the light, the ambiance and the overall feel.
marina7 (7785) 2013-11-24 12:40
I like the angle you chose to show off those two famous golden towers. They do look in perfect synch though belong to different cultures. Beautiful golden light and fine clarity of the image.
Wish you all the best!

The golden Obelisk is glowing under the dark blue sky. It echos the Eiffel Tower beautifully. The larger picture does help me to admire it more. Thanks for sharing.

Fabulous night shot over the two known monument of paris, Gosia.
An excelent tech. details on camera settings, the Hieroglyphs ( the ancient Egyptian writing's), is in immaculate sharpness. Golden light in great contrast against the darkening cloudy sky aloft.
Impressive stuff to look at, cheers.

Very nice blue hour capture from Paris. The Aegyptian obelisk in competition with the Eiffel.
Very good layout and perfect light management.
Many interesting notes.
TFS and have a nice evening

Your choice of viewpoint, and the resultant perspective, make us wonder which of these is the taller structure. But I must remember. Small: far away; large: near at hand! I think I've got it now. Gorgeous colours in this late evening shot.

Hello Gosia. The Obelisk and Eiffel Tower are two outstanding attraction of Paris. I like the presentation of the scene very well. Best composition, fantastic light and good technical quality.
chrislo (3349) 2013-11-30 14:25
Great night shot taken from a well selected viewpoint that has enabled you to include two of the most iconic Paris landmarks. The blue hour has given you the opportunity to produce a fine, sharp photo and bring out lots of detail in the scene despite not having a tripod. The colours are brought out very nicely and you've mastered the light perfectly. Congratulations !
Have a nice weekend.

Fantastic capture of these two landmarks of Paris at night from a very well chosen POV.Excellent clarity, colours and light management.Well done,TFS and best regards.
InasiaJones (30736) 2013-12-04 18:38
I hate it when the sky is covered by heavy clouds during the blue hour, as it corrupts the tones and blocks all the luminosity from the residual light. But when it is partially covered like on your photo, then you get the best of both world, with a very dramatic effect. Very catchy!
I like the juxtaposition of these two famous monuments, something I don't recall to have seen before, with the magic of all these street lamps and there golden halo. Very well done Gosia!
nikkitta (10418) 2013-12-07 14:35
A well taken and composed capture of blue hour with the golden monuments shining brightly against such a background
Well presented with space at the front and good perspective
Always think this obelisk must be at the places where it belongs as well as the one on top of the stairs at the Piaza D Espangne
adores (32148) 2013-12-07 15:40
Another fantastic night shot! We can see very well the details of the obelisk and I like the composition, the blue sky and those people around. Exposure is perfect!

kato (10563) 2013-12-15 10:23
You're capturing well this place by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the wide Concorde sqaure with a giant Egyptian obelisk in blue hour. It looks like a beautiful obelisk with a good design. It harmonizes well with blue sky. And, it's also tasteful for seeing the Tower Eiffel at right side as a option.
josepmarin (57065) 2013-12-16 2:50
what a splendid overlapping of these two icons of Paris, as the Obelisk and the Tour Eiffel.
The golden lighting of both monuments gives a fantastic contrast with the sky at blue hour.
I like the suitable framing related with the slender vertical elements, and the good perspective between both.
An exposure managed well, and a great sharpness, it make this composition very pleasant at sight.

Great two-ones picture ! The complementarity of yellow and the perfect position of the obelisk and Eiffel tower makes it very attractive. Excellent sharpness that permits us to look at the details of hieroglyphs of the obelisk.
