Here's one to Claude, I believe he'll know why...
Yesterday I was looking for a short and fast telephoto that would fit my digital rig, something similar to my old 135 Leica I used at full aperture : I found out and bought myself a Canon 85/1.8 lens, which I think I'll like very much .
Went out today to try it under the rain -it was really a dog day afternoon- and saw these guys from far away, I had to run a little to stay at reasonable distance and get that specific scene.
This is taken out of the nearest subway station to my house. I suppose they are either Romanian or ex-Yugoslavian folks : when I go to work each morning they're litterally queuing on the quay, waiting to catch the best wagon and play their music.
I guess you will think "People backs AGAIN!"... right, but there's someone looking at them, and I was precisely waiting for her...

the woman on the poster.
i think she, with her blue-purple background ( also the eiffel tower) give the photograph the much needed dash of colour. without this particular poster, i think the photograph would have been pretty much incomplete.
take care :)
edit: sorry .... more than the colour it is the vibrancy that is added by the poster

maciekda (19895) 2005-02-13 13:47
finally sth from your 20D, nice compo here with that poster in the corner, the woman there looks there where she should be looking - well seen. and 85 suppose to be a nice lens. it is a nice photo and waiting for a very nice nice
didcreole (962) 2005-02-13 13:54
kikvel (4784) 2005-02-13 13:55
nice shot of the almost fully synchronized walkers (2 out of three is not bad...)
the woman at the sign seems to be watching them and so they may be doing the same
I like the pic, and specially because accordions are an instrument I like to listen to...
the water at the street adds a nostalgic mood too

That's a very nice shot Luko, and suberply well planned. The DoF works well for it. That lens sounds interesting, I'm so used to zooms, but you're right, that speed culd be realy valuable on occassions, looking forward to your future results.
Maru (0) 2005-02-13 14:01
Inspite of being blur in the background, I think that the woman in the poster is the principal object in your shot, my eyes just go there directly.
I like the three men, specialy their pose, thy seem to be very tired.
Fixfocus (9385) 2005-02-13 14:05
A good capture, very well composed Luko!
I like the natural colors very much.
Congratulations to camera and superb lens,-when will you show us the bokeh of the 85mm? ;-)
Porteplume (3436) 2005-02-13 14:12
When you keep sending such "eyecatching" images I have to open the thumbnails and I didn't guess it was yours this time.
Everything works here. The men are sharply frozen on the blurry background, it gives a lot of depth. A very attractive composition evoquing a lot of joy in spite of the rainy day in Paris and of "people's backs again". [But it's maybe an idea for the members who felt shy photographing people on the streets? - Photography Forum]
efimoore (2126) 2005-02-13 15:37
What is it about accordionists that makes special shots? I don’t know, maybe because they are almost an extinct species. Good catch shooting 3 at once, walking together in the rain. The blurry bg adds much color and interest. And the girl… well enough was already said
avigur_11 (22087) 2005-02-13 23:01
A very nice catch from behind, Luko. the billboard woman is a very nice background, and I think that the shallow works well here. Maybe the framing is a bit too tight, but in total I like it very much.
Tavo (587) 2005-02-14 2:25
Very well orchestrated image, literally, in all terms of photographic composition.
It is a masculine picture - for us, would-be-machos, is much more interesting to see the girl from the poster loking at us (our representatives), mighty with their musical instruments on their backs, than the three guys "en face"; we can easier identify ouselves with them. A rear view sometimes could be an asset.
kolesn (591) 2005-02-14 3:42
Besides the funny trio itself have you noticed that all of the guys evidently stare at the poster girl who... looks at them!
RandomCameraGuy (3071) 2005-02-14 4:37
They look like three toughguys---but carrying accordions! An odd juxtaposition. Hey this is a nice one, it is yet another display of how you don't need to always capture a face to capture a mood.
So Luko this was with an 85mm prime huh? Could you tell me the advantages of this focal length? It seems like it would be an cumbersome lens to work with considering the distance you have to be to catch something. What else are you using with your 20D?
BTW I have a question to ask you, I'll send it by email.
jp80 (8443) 2005-02-14 5:24
Hum, belle image Luko !
gaby (19819) 2005-02-14 11:45
Photo absolument superbe
Composition renforcée par la profondeur de champ
Ebbe (9617) 2005-02-14 12:04
Nice repetions of both accordions, men and there poses. The woman on the right adds a lot with the longing look she is sending to the guys. Also the Eiffel got a place to bring in romantic Paris in the picture. All those symbols....three men, three accordeons and three standing things that ends with a head.
cgrindahl (6113) 2005-02-14 13:39
This is wonderful Luko, clearly the product of the care you bring to the craft of photography. You chose precisely this moment to capture the scene, with not only the elegant woman on display at the right, but also the delicately wrought posts through which this trio are passing. Perhaps the posts and lovely cobble sidewalk they are passing were simply serendipitous finds, but they definitely add to the texture of the image.
This highly regarded fast lens serves you well at f/2, creating the limited depth of field and the very nice bokeh with the rich colors of an urban scene. It is nice to see Paris through the lens of your camera. I hope we'll see more from this camera and lens.
Isabelle (9046) 2005-02-14 14:32
i personally LOVE rainy days for pictures: almost no shadows, colors are enhanced, but here the composition is carefully thought. One notice you,ve waited (for long perhaps) to have the subject which would fit the frame as well as the 'moment of happiness' (as we say in literature) to press the shutter.
a real delight to my eyes.
robiuk (10807) 2005-02-14 17:06
Excellent from A to Z, Luko!
That's all I have to say.
Curioso (9271) 2005-02-14 17:39
Very appealing picture. They look like three cowbays coming back from their harassing daily duty. I find the composition especially dynamic as we feel as if they were isolated in their march going toward the blur. Don't ask me why but I also feel these blue jeans and the little red belt add a lot to the dynamism of the compo and the presence of these guys. I just love it !
How could you shoot this in Paris ? It looks so parisian but so impossible for me to capture in the streets :)
eleparc (24063) 2005-02-14 17:40
what i like most about this shot is the look of the poster woman on these guys... she looks so despiseful... if she takes the metro everyday, i might know why..haha! nice framing!
MKING (3054) 2005-02-15 4:53
Really, really, clever; it seems so simple but you've put a lot of thought into this. What I like is their legs, completely extraneous from you message but it's interesting that the position of their legs mid-stride are completely different for each of them. Adds a little individual flavour to each player when they otherwise all look so similar.
I like this sort of weather for photography, I get bored of blue skies and dark shadows really quickly. Here, though, I find the light levels drop of dramatically before or after a storm making it a real challenge.
Will you be replicating the focal lengths you had/have with your R5?
alimo3 (6854) 2005-02-15 18:09
Proxilva (2157) 2005-02-16 6:51
ooh boy!!! Mr. 'still in love with ancient techniques' bought himself a digital or nummeriqueif you prefer...
where have all the 'cool' boys gone?!? :DDD
nothing bad about the photo thought... the rainy admosphere and the advertisements breath the life in the urban digital world, but still....
hmmm maybe i just have been gone for too long and missed all out on the latest inventions...
now i'm gonna think ofjokes about your hairstyle...
michel_r (1118) 2005-02-16 15:04
pretty macho & western style as mentionned.
Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2005-02-17 17:39
Hi Luko, Im glad that you started uploading one of your new digital toy. It was really worthwhile running after these guys, your composition is a feast to the eye, the wet street, the puddles, the woman and especially her looks. I don't think they are machos, though. Maybe the guy in the middle with his leather jacket and his pointy shoes, HE is looking at the poster, and look at the way the other two walk, not cool enough.
Great picture Luko.
Have fun in Thailand...
Zepi (22848) 2005-02-18 8:57
Bonjour Luko !
Magnifique photo !
J’aime cette scène !

Ca fourmille de détails !

Good composition with a nice DoF, Well done
dolin (15703) 2005-02-22 3:50
hantulaut (3441) 2005-03-06 1:38
the atmo here are pretty nice and picture are excellent because its sharpness, and the motion also.
danielswalsh (13599) 2005-03-08 2:55
What a great shot!
3 guys walking along, who could just as easily be carrying weapons (as a mobster type of theme), but carrying accordians...
I don't think I've ever been in the presence of an accordian player, let alone lucky enough to capture 3 toting their instruments around. Great capture, with a nice DOF and color tone.
Enia (365) 2005-03-10 9:52
Simply wonderful...sorry for not finding the appropriate words to express why I like it...in 6 words...it is a food for thought! congratsulations!
rowanb (864) 2005-03-24 22:55
great photo, nice composition and DOF. the poster of the women on the right adds the extra interest to the photo.
mrbialy (2568) 2005-04-02 10:13
They look like three desperados. I like this shallow depth of fielt. Good capture. Wonderful composition.
bnallama (3763) 2005-05-07 9:37
Lovely and lively shot. Wonderful DoF keeping the poster at right 'blurrieness'. I think e'verboy else have said enough about this photos :-))
kinginexile (2598) 2005-07-08 2:15
Andre-H (1271) 2006-04-01 6:34
Great shot! It's well framed, everything fits together well, and the poster on the right, with the woman and the Eiffel Tower, help to give a sense of context. Nice one!
cessy (13647) 2006-06-19 17:46
what a nice street photo
it's a perfect example of sureal urban photo
