A group of folk entertainers at the port in Papeete, Tahiti. The dock for the ferry to Moorea was located no more than 300m from where we disembarked from the Seabourn Odyssey and boarded the ferry. The man in the foreground cracked open a coconut in the traditional way, with a club, and offered us pieces to eat. Here he is seen kneading coconut meat and creating a pasty skin lotion. I am happy with the symmetric composition, with the central subject not showing his face. (This to me is somewhat evocative of Salvador Dali's "Sacrament of the Last Supper", except with the central character, Christ, looking up, while the Apostles are looking down.) In a few workshop editions one can see the man breaking a coconut shell, a woman passing out samples of coconut meat, and also performing a traditional folk dance.
According to Broadway historians the musical, "South Pacific", the masterwork of Rodgers and Hammerstein, had its premiere in 1947 with Ezio Pinza (1892-1957) and Mary Martin (1913-1990) in the lead roles. Then in 1958, on the heels of the immense success of another Broadway musical "Oklahoma", also by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Hollywood set out to produce the film version of "South Pacific". Unfortunately, Ezio Pinza, who would most certainly have been the star of choice, had passed away the year before. Following screening tests, two other stars, Rossano Brazzi (1916-1994) and Mitzi Gaynor (1931-) were cast in the lead roles. (Cinema historians tell us that Doris Day was offered the lead female role, but she turned it down. Elizabeth Taylor tried out for the role, but she was turned down.)
I found a 1949 recording on Youtube of Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin singing the duet "Some Enchanted Evening". I would recommend investing 3:41 minutes to listen to the duet, and especially to the magnificent voice of Mr. Pinza, most likely never to be equaled in this role.
I took the photo with my new compact digital camera, Nikon S6200, with a fill flash. I did not have time to set up my larger camera, a Nikon D200.

this is a very nice photo with an interesting composition, lovely colours and depth behind the subjects. I like very much the way the man at the front is photographed. I agree that his not showing his face while working is a good element, I think it adds naturalness and mystery. The flash has lit him in a superb way, bringing him forth and giving him volume.
All the best,
Royaldevon (37927) 2012-02-10 12:05
This is an amazingly colourful shot. It is exceptionally vivid in the f/g with the slightest of restraints, under the shelter, in the b/g.
I, too, like the symmetry of the composition.
The details are sharply exposed and provide an interesting opportunity for scrutiny.
Have a good w/e,

the right part like taken from a Gauguin painting. Even if the show made for turists, looks wonderful. Very exotic view. Amazing red colours with the blue accent. The red flower on the right is heliconia. I dream about seeing island on the Pacific.

Lots to note here !
Nothing wrong with compacts! These are so good these days, often sharing much of their big brothers' electronics, and so often producing just as good a result. And they dont give you neck lesions !
Thanks for the clip to Youtube, and that delightful rendition, which, alas, I have to say I had never heard of. Wrong generation, wrong side of the pond ! But what a voice..
And of course your photo, which as you say, good symmetry makes it. The lead character looking down adds a sense of curiousity to the whole, and the light garden in the background pulls us right into the whole. But what a shame the girl is wearing a modern watch, and, but more understandably, the guy in glaases, but both make for jarring incongruity !

A lively, lovely picture of yours has such a strong Tahitan atmosphere that I couldn't help myself remembering Paul Gauguin's paintings.
annjackman (21813) 2012-02-12 2:14
This could be a scene from the musical that you refer to. The composition is very interesting and colourful with the dominant red clothes broken by the lady in blue. I enjoyed your note very much and I remember the music being played when I was young.
Best wishes, Ann

Looks idyllic, maybe the way Hawaii used to be decades ago? Good color saturation & reasonable sharpness. I can only imagine what the music sounds like. Have seen live performances of South Sea Islands music at Expo 88 in Brisbane, so I have some idea how it sounds. Tfs!

Hello Professor Atalay,
The group portrait has struck me immediately as one of the paintings done by Paul Gauguin himself. The colours and the tones made available in this photograph have the most stunning ambience as if Gauguin himself has come back to life in our century with a modern digital camera (I wonder if he would not have preferred to use silver based films) and has taken the image himself. As I am here looking at the result of the image brought back from this part of the world, my mind travels back to his period and I imagine how he would have been most pleased by this result presented here for us. The image not only captures the moment in which you have recorded this image, but it captures the imagination of all of us who know and love the paintings of Gauguin. I am now most convinced that what he saw in Tahiti was in fact truly a remarkable representation of what he had actually witnessed with his eyes. The photo is truly a most extraordinary work capturing both the spirit and the magic of the moment with its time which bridges the past with today. With my utmost compliments, I have come to admire your image. I love the image with its spirit and timeless quality.
With my very best and admiration,
Have a very pleasant Sunday evening, Professor

You're capturing well this traditional folk dance with musical players by a good composition, so it's interesting and impressive to see traditional clothes of musicians/dancer and coconut carpet. It's impressive in some colorful flowers of the southern country, too. I remember that I looked by a movie of "Souce Pacific" when I was a child.
ikeharel (69809) 2012-02-13 4:26
A colorful & traditional costumes, of those performers.
I hope the one with his head pointing lower - that is a part of the show, otherwise why not show his face...?
Lovely taken photo.

aloyho (6798) 2012-02-14 4:35
When I opened this, it immediately reminds me of the works of Paul Gauguin and his images of Tahiti. A few examples like "Taperaa Mahana 2"; "Parau Parau"; "Scenes from Tahitian Life" and "Ia Orana Maria Aka Hail Mary" have some parallels to this shot either in the atmosphere, colour schemes or composition.
It is interestine to note that nothing much have changed in the way we look at this place and the choice of subject matter.
The low key image is most suitable and I enjoyed the strong local flavour and the song. Great shot!!
eldancer1 (36343) 2012-02-14 9:09

Merhaba Bulent Bey. Every time I think of French Polynesia I think of Paul Gaugin and the beautiful, stately women he painted.Your colour scheme reminds me of him to some degree also. I saw a number of documentaries and unlike these smiling performers, the local people interviewed are itching for independence whilst at the same time wondering how they will survived without french subsidies coming in. A catch22 for any small nation. I also found out that traditional tattoos(design and method) are being reclaimed by the young. NB I thought of you when I posted my image today. Please have a look at the video clip I mention.Selamlar. Klaudio.

Rengarenk bir kare olmuş bu. Sanırım turistiktir giysilerin asıl maksadı, ama yine de çok renkli yaşantıları olduğu bir gerçek.
PaulVDV (28219) 2012-02-19 13:59
A wonderful tropical and very colourful picture that - even without the title - is recognized by everyone as a view of the South Pacific. It makes us think at the works of Gauguin and it also has that paradisiacal atmosphere.
The photo shows a group of folk entertainers. How should we imagine the daily life of the inhabitants of French Polynesia ?
Best regards, Paul
shevchenko (20438) 2012-02-19 19:29
Good frame to show a group of people in the shed, a lots of traditional stuffs here, nice to see they use leaves from banana tree as carpet, I like their colourful traditional costumes too, interesting composition and informative note, thanks for sharing.
Angshu (56750) 2012-02-22 4:33
Hello Professor 'A'
This seems to be like seeing a play! Nice colours add to the elements which are so typically tropical...the fruits, the leaves. The compact camera took a decent picture though I might nitpick about the cut-off foot of the man in the centre. The effect of a painting is quite pronounced. As always your notes are a treat to read
With Warm Regards
nikkitta (17066) 2012-02-23 19:21
At first view and knowing it was taken in Tahiti , it seems a Gaugin's scene
Interesting note to best understand your capture
Even if it s a touristic welcome ceremony the atmosphere has lots of local color
I like the composition with the man cracking the coconuts in the FG as the main subject, also the way he smiles in the 2 WS
I also enjoyed the WS, like the way he smiles ofering
Didi (60588) 2012-02-25 3:37
Hi my friend
Interesting local scene with rich colours.
Very nice festive ambiance.
danyy (0) 2012-03-01 4:13
beaucoup de rouge dans cette scène à l'ombre des feuilles de palmiers. Il me plairait de joindre l'ouie à la vue, profiter de cette musique folklorique, typique.
Dommage pour le pied coupé du personnage de l'avant plan.
adores (45029) 2012-03-03 17:30
Really different from Lisbon, right:))?? I'm happy you're showing this. We don't see so many photos of this region here! Seems a nice performance!- I like the details around, as well as their clothes!
Alan_Kolnik (620) 2012-04-01 19:03
Great composition, but the performers in the rear are too dark. A bit of work with Photoshop could lighten them up and make their features more distinct
baddori (20121) 2012-08-19 23:15
This photo antecipa the next.
Gauguin had many espresioni to grasp and very colorful.
The pleasure of the exotic, and even if animators hannola spontaneity of places.
