The meal of the seagulls.

In the "Vieux Bassin", old basin of the Sète fishing port, protected by the Saint-Louis mole builds in 1666.

In 1666 Pierre-Paul Riquet, who built the Canal du Midi connecting the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean, following the will of king de France Louis XIV, creates the port of “Cette”.
The city was founded in 1673, after the beginning of the construction of the port.
The construction of the môle Saint-Louis, 750 meters length, begins on July 29th, 1666.

It is the 1st fishing port of the French Mediterranean. Fishing of sète is made of artisanal flotillas, made up by family armaments. Fishing is day laborer (left the boats 3 hours, return towards 16-18 hours), during 220-230 days of fishing per annum, for an average tonnage from 8,000 to 10,000 tons (2/3 blue fishes, 1/3 white fish).
The fleet sétoise inclued:
- 34 general-purpose trawlers from 18 to 25 meters.
- 17 tuna purse seiner from 25 to 45 meters.
- about thirty small boats practitioner traditional fishing.
_ the production of oysters and moulds is mainly concentrated on banks of the pond of Thau.

One practices on Sète two types of trawling.

The basic trawl:
Trawling known as demersal which relates to white fish (plate, mullet, angler, sea-bream). After 1 to 2 hours of road, one arrives on fishing zone, one puts the trawl at water and one it leaflet with the back of the trawler during 3 hours at a speed of approximately 4 nodes. From 3 to 4 features are realized per day, for captures from 500 to 600 kg.

The pelagic trawl:
The trawling pelagic with 4 panels is more often a selective fishing carried out between 2 water close to the bottom for the capture of sardine and anchovy but also in an additional way some hakes and mackerels. The features are shorter, approximately 40 minutes per hour. On the whole, 4 to 6 operations of fishing are carried out per day. The captures vary between 3 and 6 tons per boat.

Sete is a French commune of the department of Herault and Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 43 400 Sétois and Sétoises distributed on 24 km², is 1792 hab/km².

It is the town of artists like Paul Valéry, Georges Brassens, Manitas de Plata, Jean Vilar, the brothers Di Rosa.

Georges Charles Brassens, french poet song writer and performer, was born in Sète on October 22nd, 1921, and died in Saint-Gély-of-Fesc, Herault, on October 29th, 1981.

The title reminds me of the film directed by Alfred Hitchcock; I hope these birds don't get that way inclined ;-) A good capture of these swirling seagulls looking for a free lunch. A well presented image with lots of atmosphere. Je te souhait un bon weekend.

Hi Joël,
Indeed an abundance of birds! The boat here is almost invisible behind them. The lighthouse is a fine bonus in this composition, so is the very blue water! A fine reminder of those days in 2004 that we spent here in Sète. Excellent oysters here!

Il n'y a plus de place pour encore d'oiseaux. Quelle ruche et quel spectacle qui durait une seconde. Ta reaction Joel dans le moment juste. Le resultat me plait beaucoup. Moi aussi, j'aimerais imiter tes pas...Passe un tres beau week-end.

ricordo di avere messo tra le mie preferite una tua foto, bella come questa, catturata nel gennaio 2008 a Sete. Questi gabbiani che accompagnano i pescherecci creano una magica atmosfera, specialmente se la scena è catturata con questa superba qualità fotografica. Una foto molto dinamica, complimenti!

Trois belles images de cette scène toujours étonnante de cette nuée de goélands affamés se ruant sur les bateaux de pêche.Tu sembles avoir trouvé l'endroit idéal pour avoir ce très bon POV; tu étais toi même sur un bateau?

très belle la scène des mouettes qui poursuivent le navire, images rares il est de plus en plus maintenant très plus facile voir les mouettes dans les terrils qui poursuivent les camions des ordures.

Salut Joel.
Je magnifie un moment dans cette composition attractive et originale, terrible la quantité de mouettes, suppose qu'ils lanceraient un poisson depuis le bateau, tu as mis l'opportunité à profit très bien. Fantastique la qualité d'image avec tant un oiseau dans le plan, tous ils sont très nets, POV excellent avec le phare au fond, très bien le niveau de couleur. Un bon travail.

La prise de vue permet de voir les oiseaux qui entourent le bateau de pêche. Ces oiseaux donnent de la vie à l'image. La bonne luminosité a un bel effet sur les couleurs. Bonne soirée.

Devant un tel type d'image,bien évidemment j'apprécie la mer,ses couleurs ses odeurs(si on pouvait les transmettre)mais ici j'entends surtout le bruit des volatiles.

Bonjour Joël!
Si je me souviens bien, c'est une de tes photos favorites, que cette nuée de goëlands poursuivant le bateau de pêche! Mais celle-ci est vraiment saisissante avec la nuée tellement dense qu'elle fait penser au film "Les Oiseaux" d'Hitchcock!...Pas trop quand même, car l'atmosphère n'est pas du tout lugubre! Et finalement, on a l'impression qu'ils se rendent tous à une joyeuse fête!
Mais auront-ils l'occasion de se régaler?
J'aime bien le fond bleu, mer-ciel, remonté par quelques touches vives: rouge et bleu-roi du bateau! Les mouettes elles se fondent bien avec la couleur dominante du bateau!

PS. J'ai beaucoup aimé la vidéo de Georges Brassens! ça rappelle le bon vieux temps! La Bretagne a un peu profité de la présence du chanteur également, n'est-ce-pas?
J'ai aussi retrouvé sa tombe parmi tes clichés! Toute simple avec les autres membres de sa famille: près de la mer, mais discrètement, contrairement à Chateaubriand qui s'est pris une île à lui tout seul! (Voir mon thème: "All Saints. Tributes to deceased")
