Photographer’s Note

The Hameau de la Reine ("The Queen's Hamlet"), started in 1783 and completed in 1787, was designed by the Queen's favourite architect, Richard Mique. Built on the far side of a landscaped pond situated in a secluded section of Le Petit Trianon gardens in Versailles, the hamlet included a farmhouse, dairy, and mill (pictured here). The hameau, in essence an ersatz farm (or ferme ornée), was meant to evoke a peasant village in Normandy. It was said that the Queen and her attendants would dress as shepherdesses and milkmaids in this rustic retreat.
