Photographer’s Note

Fishing with the sail needle is very practised on the coasts of Charente-Maritime and in the estuaries of Charente and the Gironde. It is also practised on the escarpées coasts of the Vendée and to the mouth of the Loire but in these areas this tradition with tendency to grow blurred. The sail needle is a square thread of a surface of a few square meters tended on a reinforcement planes and gone down horizontally by means of a winch since a pontoon which advances at sea and on which is generally built a shelter, even a small housing. After a few minutes of waiting, for dissipation of the disorder caused by the descent, the net went up rather quickly, imprisoning in theory the fish which were between him and surfaces it (a soft food "boît" can be placed in its center). It is a fishing very regulated because of the construction of a pontoon on the maritime field On 600 destroyed by the storm of December 1999, 450 of the sail needles charentais could be rebuilt by respecting certain directives "any wood, roof out of possible sheet". This fishing is also practised as an amateur either with small nets (< 1 m²), called balances, simply re-installed with the hand, often along the quays of the ports, or with nets a little larger, operated by a rudimentary winch hung the time of the fishing party to rambarde of a bridge.
