October 17th, 2004.
Its in 1639 that Duparquet, the gonernor of the Martinique, has built the fort called "Fort-Royal" at the beginning, and now "Fort-Saint-Louis". The town grows around of this fort. It take the name of "Foyal", and after "Fort-de-France".It is in 1681 that the town of Saint-Pierre" loss the title of capital of the Martiniuqe for the new town.
The town has not groth a lot in the 18th century due to some disasters (flood, epidemic, hurricane, earthquake). It's after the catastrophe of 1902, that destroy the city of Saint-Pierre, that Fort-de-France know a truth explosion of people, growing from 10'000 to 100'000 people now. This is representing about the trird of the Martinique.

The picture, taken from a boat coming from the Pointe-du-Bout, shon you the port, the old city with its cathedral. and the new city on the hills.
