Photographer’s Note

The Castagniccia was long one of the richest regions of Corsica through the production of chestnut flour. This wealth is built in the villages but also in religious buildings.
Thus in 1654, La Porta d'Ampugnani became a parish in its own right. She hurried to build its church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Its construction lasted over time through lack of funding. Begun around 1648, extended to 1680, it saw its facade, designed by the Milanese architect Dominico Baïna, completed in 1707.

Over time, the side chapels have been built between the buttresses. For the procedure, it is the same. Thus the high altar dates from 1708 while his gray decor dates from 1886.

For the record, know that the organ is the work of Franciscan Marracci (1780), it was recovered in the ruins of the convent of Saint Anthony in Rogliano Cape Corse, destroyed during the French Revolution in the year VIII the Republic.
This was done at the request of the wife of Commissioner Salicetti from La Porta. One wonders whether this Salicetti Commissioner was not the cause of this destruction ....

The Baroque facade resembles a stage like all facades to Sicily. It hides its beauty by the structure of the church itself. The portal is developed by 4 columns and 2 pilasters

And of course, at his side, a 5-storey campanile is a height of 45 m. It was built in 1720 by architect Baïna and completed by Pompei, from Quercitello.

St. John the Baptist was classified under the Historic Monuments in 1975.
