The tower of Bellegarde. It is the site which is at the origin of the name of the village "Beautiful-Guard" (6100 inhabitants with 18km of Nimes and Arles.
Mentioned for the first time under the name of "Castrum Bellae-Gardae" in 1208 at the time of the Albigensian crusade, this rectangular keep is typical the Middle Ages. Ideal place as regards monitoring, this tower dominates the village and all the plain. It was integrated in a strengthened unit much vaster which played a dissuasive role and of prestige. As for the virgin (Our Lady of Bellegarde) installed on the top of the Tower, it goes back only to 1875 at the time of the dedication of the current church. It has been for this time that the site of the castle is named by Bellegardais "the Madonna". From time immemorial, the tower was a crossing point of many visitors. Some, as pupils companions of the duties left traces there, So one can admire, on the face Is monument, many graffitis which for the majority is dated. Prestigious framework of the festival of guitar which is held each year at the beginning of July, the site saw being born, in 2006, of new installations such as a stone amphitheatre.
