I quess we know the feeling of being in a place where we feel we don't belong... A pub or a restaurant where the way in is imediatly the best way out (but we don't)... a party where you just stand and smile and your eyes desparatly search for a likeminded soul, wich all probably are at the other party downtown, so better search for the sign of the emergancy-exit sign and leave (but you don't)... It's strange that we often stay to long at places where we don't wanna be, and afterwards saying to eachother how bad that place was... Why don't we do, what feels best all the time?
life doesn't last that long....
[taken in; cimetière du Père Lachaise, Paris]
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail
A smile from a veil
Do you think you can tell
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts
Hot ashes for trees
Hot air for a cool breeze
Cold comfort for change
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found the same old fears.
Wish you were here.
wish you were here, pink floyd

this is a winning shot!! (you know what I mean)
What a sad mood...you perfectly captured the loneliness of this man, the light is just perfect...beautiful note!!
Hanssie (10465) 2004-10-24 5:19
The words you used are exactly the reality, Jorrit ! The picture is beautiful. A higher point used, some "darkness" in this scene, the man, the sun and the grainy effect, it is wonderful.

one always recognizes "Le père Lachaise" with the first glance.
your photograph is superb, it releases a very dark but very soft environment as the same time.
maciekda (19895) 2004-10-24 6:40
colors? hm.. why not..especially when those colors are moody like here. very nice compo with this road going to the middle of the frame and trees on the side, the person on this path and the sun make the picture, very nice one, moody
Tavo (587) 2004-10-24 8:43
This is the case when one would like to praise the colors, composition etc., but even the highest evaluation would be felt like blasphemy - so strong is the mood, harmony and overall expression of this image. The same (blasphemy feeling) applies to my desire to make addition to the note: "And there are also places like this where we wish to stay (forever), but we leave just because we have to (or because we were not invited? and welcomed?), and go back to the places and events where we feel that don’t belong...
Hope I’ve not overcomed your recent murky thoughts, Jorrit. Anyway I can’t express them in your excellent, always surprising way, with a spice of heresy. BTW I remember many years ago it was prohibited to take pictures in le Pére Lachaise. If it is still so, congratulations to remaining yourself ;-)

the exact amount of colour in an image in everything nostalgic.

Sometimes you really amaze me with your music references. Not that I'm much older than you, that is NOT the case..., but it seems to me as if you were not living your own "Era", but rather a "piece" of history when you were actually not born yet.
Back to Père Lachaise.. how did you know that it was a good (great) option to leave this photograph in colours rather than convert it to b&w?? In my opinion, it is not obvious at all, although there is a slice of sunset filtering through those trees...
You are very good. I read somewhere that you were going to buy a 35mm or a 24mm tomorrow...go for it, continue to make photographs, and please share them over here. I'm a fan.

have a baby and you will never have this problem again...mitai!
he will be crying all day long!!!
very nice music, for far one of my favorites. PF is my preferred band and I dream of going to a PF concert someday (before they are too old).
The picture has the mood, very nice sunset and the long road of loneliness...
well seen friend!
I feel the same as Gal here...you reached for the secret TOO soon...you cried for the moon!
Seems that you are living in another era friend, you should be listening to J.Lo instead of PF! Maybe B. Spears...

Ed è subito sera
Ognuno sta solo sul cuor della terra
trafitto da un raggio di sole:
ed è subito sera.
Chacun reste seul
sur le coeur de la terre
transpercé par un rayon de soleil:
et c'est déjà le soir.
Da "Acque e terre" (1920-29) di Salvatore Quasimodo (Modica 1901 -Napoli 1968)

A great shot, cleverly enhanced by the associations in the note. The graveyard/ashes/ghosts reference works well. Actually I don't think these lyrics are that great, they seem to work against each other to a certain extent, 'heroes for ghosts' - seems bad, 'hot ashes for trees', 'hot air for a cool breeze', 'cold comfort for chnage', all seem good, so at the very least a lack of symetry there, which has been bothering me for 30 years.

Seems everybody has alot of prejudices against us youngsters here on TE, huh? ;o) I mean with me they are right I have no clue who Pink Floyd are and right now I´m humming the latest Miss Spears release, but in your case Jorrit they are wrong you`re sophisticated and wise :oD
Anyways, this is exellent and I`d like to order a print!

Hey Jorrit, ja dat wil ik ook wel weten, hoe ja weet dat deze in kleur moet. Kan ik bij jou een cursus volgen, ik vind 'm een werkelijk prachtige sfeer hebben. Mooie hoek, ook
I, too, think, because of the beautiful glow here, that colour works best, and I agree with Gal, you're good! And with PF you have an excellent musical taste as well.
Anngezien ik te vaak je prachtige foto's mis, pleur ik je nou bij m'n favorieten. Ik ben inderdaad (meestal) een fan.

Once again Jorit great notes and beautiful photo...mysterious, moody and dark...your style! I like as it is...almost coloured. I think is of your best...at least in my opinion...anyway no much technicalities to add...very well done!

Gran composicion, gran título Jorrit.
Excelente imagen, con el aire espectral que una escena así necesita.
Colorido e iluminación que dramatizan el cuadro y la genial letra de Pink Floyd.
Gracias por publicarla.
Great composition, great title Jorrit.
Excellent image, with the spectral air that a scene thus needs.
Colorful and illumination that dramatize the picture and the brilliant lyrics of Pink Floyd.

Nice picture. I loved your note and you get my sympathy for that.

Hola Jorrit. Una composición muy buena con una iluminación estupenda que solo se ve ensombrecida por el efecto del ruido electrónico. Imagino en todo caso que no se ha podido evitar. Aún así la foto es muy buena, felicidades.

You have presented a story Jorrit. A very good presentation. I like the narration that goes very well with the situation presented in the picture . There is not much to say about the picture though!

Beautiful. You have captured mood and aesthetic near-perfection with this shot. Bravo!
