During holidays in Conquet in 2003, we had made very pleasant strolls who led us to this very beautiful site.

The lighthouse of Saint Mathieu is located on the point Saint Mathieu, in the surroundings of Brest, Finistere.
It was built in 1835 in the ruins of an old abbey. Nowadays, there are only some houses gathered around the ruins of the abbey, but it should not be believed that, in the past, Saint Mathieu was limited only to the abbey and its dependences.
As of the beginning, a village had been established, attracted by the coast, its possibilities commercial, its richnesses of breaking of wreck and by the presence of the monastery. “The abbot of Saint Mathieu has many privileges: Right of mob, right of “furnace to round of applause”, right of sheaf to the twelfth, right of grinding, right of market, right of fair (Henri IV will institute, in 1602 five annual fairs and a market per week), right of measurement of corn, right of measurement of the wine,…
In 1157 Herve of Leon grants to him the right of breaking and wreck on the shores of all its strongholds (In 1390 it is specified that it can seize 1/10° of the hull, cargo and gréement of the failed ship), and they were numerous the “richnesses of the universe” pushed towards the coast by the “money winds”. This right of breaking joined the right of skins which had been confirmed, in 1602, by letters patent of the king. It granted this right to the monks for “all those which perish at sea, and to the coasts of Saint Mathieu, Plougonvelin and Conquet”.

Tomorrow, I will present a view of the coast to you during strolls…

Salut Philippe,

Belle photo
