Saint-Martin-de-Ré is a French commune, located in the department of the Charente-Maritime of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 2637 Martinais in 1999, distributed out of 5 km², that is to say 549 hab./km².

The city which has several strengthened fortress conceived by Vauban, and belonged to the major sites of Vauban, is registered on the list of the world heritage of humanity by UNESCO since 2008.

July 22nd, 1627, the duke of Buckingham land on the Île de Ré defended by the troops of Jean Caylar d' Anduze de Saint-Bonnet, lord of Toiras, having the fort of Prée on the commune of la Flotte, la Flotte-en-Ré, and of the fort of Saint-Martin-de-Ré. After a long siege, English gives up their invasion in November of the same year, losing 4000 soldiers out of 7000.
Toiras lost there his brother Rollin de Saint-Bonnet de Toiras.
Jean Caylar d' Anduze of Saint-Bonnet, lord of Toiras, born on March 1st, 1585 with Saint-Jean-du-Gardonnenque, Saint-Jean-du-Gard, department of Gard, is deceased on June 14th, 1636 with Fontaneto d' Agogna close to Milan in Italy.
