Photographer’s Note

A view of the donjon or keep in the town of Niort, Deux-Sèvres. I should like to dedicate this picture, which ends my little series of photographs taken in Niort, to Joël Berthonneau (jlbrthnn) who very kindly recommended an excellent restaurant for lunch in Niort. Salut!

The keep is all that remains of the castle began by Henri II Plantagenêt, and finished by Richard I, the Lion Heart.

The castle was defended by an enclosure in form of quadrilateral which was 700 m long. It was a true city including dwellings, gardens and an arsenal over which there was a church, Saint-Gaudens, which was destroyed during wars of religion. Later the castle was used as a prison.

The keep dominates the Sèvre; it consists of two square towers connected by a building of dating from the 15th century. Nowadays it houses various museums; though it is currently closed for works.
