Photographer's Note

Niort is a town and commune in the Deux-Sèvres department (region Poitou-Charentes) in western France. The Latin name of the town was Novioritum.

The population was 60,486 in 2006 with more than 137,000 people living in the urban area. It is regarded as the French capital of mutual insurance companies, housing the headquarters of MAAF, MAIF, MACIF, SMACL and regional branches of national mutual companies such as Groupama and Banque Populaire. The town is one of the main financial centres of France (fourth ranked after Paris, Lyon and Lille). In terms of industry both chemicals and aeronautics figure highly.

Architecture wise it is noted for its massive donjon, which was started by Henry II Plantagenet and completed by Richard the Lionheart. It also has an interesting Hotel-de-Ville (Town Hall) built in the Renaissance style.
