It remains little thing of the important Roman style building, increased in Gothic, modified with the Rebirth, ruined by the destruction of the wars of religion in 1588. Restored, then rebuilt in 1685, it was damaged and used with civil and military purpose during the French revolution of 1789.
The current church was built of 1855 to 1863 by the Niort architect Pierre-Théophile SEGRÉTAIN, (1798-1864). Follower of the neo-classic style he will become the friend of Prosper Mérimée, Inspecteur of the Historic buildings.

Niort is a french commune, located in the department of Deux-Sèvres of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 56663 Niortais, distributed on 68 km², that is to say 828 hab./km².

Niort is the principal entrance point of the marsh poitevin.

Initially a Gallo-Roman agglomeration, then occupied by the francs, devastated by the Norman ones, the city as the remainder of Poitou, passes under English domination at the time of the second marriage of Aliénor of Aquitaine. English strengthened citadel with castle and enclosure which had a 2.800 m length, whose today KEEP, Keep.
Bertrand of Guesclin took again Niort of the hands of the English on March 23, 1372.

Francoise d'AUBIGNÉ was born there. Future Mrs. de Maintenon (Niort 1635 - Saint-Cyr-l'Ecole 1719). Favorite, then morganatic wife in 1683 of the king Louis XIV. Her father Constant d'Aubigné, was the son of the famous poet Agrippa d'Aubigné.

Henri-Georges CLOUZOT was born in Niort on November 20, 1907, and died in Paris on January 12, 1977. Realizer, scenario writer, dialogist and producer of cinema, it realized inter alia "Quai des Orfèvres", "Le Salaire de la peur", "Le Corbeau", "Les Diaboliques".

The economy in Niort rests primarily on the tertiary sector. Capital of the mutual insurance companies, it is also the capital of the French social economy.
Niort shelters many head offices. (MAAIF MAAF MACIF SMACL IMA GCA SMIP etc…).
According to Banque de France, Niort is the fourth French money market, in term of exchanges of financial flows, behind Paris, Lyon and Lille.
