He was killed in the fight January 28th, 1794, at 21 years old, to Nuaillé in the department of Maine-et-Loire. He was one of the iconic leaders of the insurgents of the Guerre de Vendée, 1793-1796, whose causes are mainly the law voted by the "Assemblée Constituante", "Constituent Assemnly", on July 12, 1790 imposing the civil constitution of the clergy applied in July 1791 and the law of February 23, 1793 voted by the "Convention" imposing the levying by conscription and drawing lots, of an army of 300 000 men. About 200 000 deaths and nameless atrocities against the Natives of Vandee region.

The War of Vendée began with an uprising of the farmers around Bressuire in the department of Deux Sèvres, which looked for the officers having the experiment of the war and the command, to place them in the head. And so on April 13th, 1793, Henri de La Rochejaquelein made this famous speech in his troops:

"Si mon père était parmi nous, il vous inspirerait plus de confiance, car à peine me connaissez-vous. J'ai d'ailleurs contre moi et ma grande jeunesse et mon inexpérience ; mais je brûle déjà de me rendre digne de vous commander. Allons chercher l'ennemi : Si j'avance, suivez-moi, si je recule, tuez-moi, si je meurs, vengez-moi."

"If my father was among us, he would inspire in you more trust, because hardly know me. I have moreover against me and my big youth and my inexperience; but I am already burning to make deserving ordering you. Let us fetch the enemy: If i move forward, follow me, if i move back, kill me, if i die, avenge me."
