The "Tour de la Lanterne" 15th century, also known as Tower of the Four Sergeants.

The Tower of the Lantern, "Tour de la Lanterne", is a part with the Tower of the Chain, "Tour de la Chaîne", and the Tower Saint-Nicolas, "Tour Saint-Nicolas", of the vestiges of the old fortifications protecting the city and the port and destroyed on royal order after the seat of "La Rochelle" in 1628.
It was built in 31 years of 1445 to 1476. On the basis of cylindrical barrel, of 25 m high and 15 m diameter is made up an octagonal spire bringing the total height to 75 m. It is a tower bell-tower, which was also used as house-light, of maritime, military and political prison, as testify it to very many graffitis on the walls.
This tower bore several names according to its role or of its history. "Turn of Garrot", when the weapons of the boats entering the port were neutralized there. "Turn of the Priests", after the massacre of ecclesiastics in 1568 during the wars of religion, and the Révolution Française. "TOWER of the 4 SERGEANTS", after the éxécution in Paris in 1822 of 4 plotters against the king Louis XVIII, who had been imprisoned there.
