In la Rochelle, the TOUR SAINT-NICOLAS, Saint-Nicolas tower, 14th century, at the entrance of the VIEUX PORT, old harbour, and one of sea bus, which are completely electric.

_ The TOUR SAINT-NICOLAS is one of the iconic towers of the VIEUX PORT in La Rochelle. Chain linking the Tour de la Chaîne of the fourteenth century, was denied access to the port.
Construction lasted from 1345 to 1376. The marshy nature of the soil, required the prior construction of a raft made of oak piles driven to a depth of 6 m and networked with other pieces of oak. The heavy weight of the masonry was sinking foundations causing a tilt of 20 cm to the east. It took years to stabilize the ground and straighten the tower, which kept a tilt characteristic, more or less visible depending on the viewpoint. Height of 36 m and a diameter of 23 m, its thick walls 3 to 6 m, turrets, parapets, battlements, loopholes and other devices, were well defended construction.

_ The VIEUX PORT from La Rochelle, was the 12th to the 15th century the first Atlantic port.
The 17th and 18th century, he served half the traffic to the French colonies in North America.

La Rochelle is a french commune, located in the department of the Charente-Maritime of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated with 74707 Rochelais in 2009, distributed out of 28.4 km², that is to say 2 630.5 hab./km².

La Rochelle history.

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the anticyclone of the Azores, and the thermal inertia of the ocean, the average sunning of La Rochelle is close to that of Perpignan, and is best of Atlantique coast with 2250 hours of annual sunning. Soft winters, and moderate pluviometry supports the development of plants and Mediterranean trees, like the holm oak.

I see you experienced much better weather than we did on Bastille Day up in Normandy:-) A fine composition with a very pleasant atmosphere to it. The boat placed on the diagonal acts as a pointer toward the lighthouse. Excellent technical quality. Bonne journée!

Bonjour, cher Joël,
La Tour Saint-Nicolas se dresse fièrement et arbore le drapeau français flottant au vent de juillet !
Le vol d'une mouette complète joliment l'ensemble du tableau.
Quant au phare (étoile des marins) il se fait remarquer par ses jolies taches de couleur.

What a wonderful picture with a lot different subjects.
But the Saint-Nicolas tower is the real eye catcher, with the Frence flag on the tower.

La distance entre le bateau et le phare donne de la profondeur à l'image. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails et les couleurs de l'architecture de la Tour Saint-Nicolas. La bonne luminosité met en valeur les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Bonjour Joël,

Bon angle pour présenter cette tour massive, surmontée du drapeau tricolore ; j'ignorais que sa construction avait été aussi compliquée, et qu'elle penchait encore légèrement... certes moins que la Tour de Pise !

Trois versions assez proches (la mouette fait la différence!)de l'entrée du port de La Rochelle. La tour est bien éclairée et le ciel en arrière plan enjolive bien l'image. J'aurais bien dit une photo royale....mais c'est raté!

Le triangle formé par le drapeau de l'embarcation,le drapeau sur la tour et le rouge du phare attire l'oeil grâce au rouge.Notre regard va chercher ces trois points de triangulation,on en oublierait presque le "vol de ce volatile".

On dirait presque une panoramique avec comme protagoniste la Tour Saint-Nicolas
