Historic town and harbour.

The town
The harbour

The "Vieux Port", "Old Harbour", of La Rochelle.
It was from XIIe to XVe centuries the 1st french harbour of the Atlantic ocean.
In XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries, it ensured half of the traffic towards the french colonies of North America.

The entry of the "Vieux Port" was defended on the left by the Chaîne Tower du XIVe century, and on right by the Saint-Nicolas Tower of XIIIe and XVe centuries.

Before arriving at the entry of the old harbour, one crosses on the left the Tour de la Lanterne of XVe siècle.

The village of fishermen of Xe century, is in XIIe century an important port, frees from the feudal supervisions, and managed by the first mayor of France.
The trade of salt and the wine, leads the city to its apogee in XIIIe century.
The Reform, Protestantism, finds a reception favorable with La Rochelle in XVIe century.
On April 30, 1628, it is the rendering after 13 months of siege carried out by the catholics Louis XIII and Richelieu. The city loses its mayor and all his privileges.
XVIIe century at the XVIIIe century, it is the re-establishment, by the trade with the French possessions of America, the Antilles and Canada, and the trade of the slaves.
In end of the XIXe century, the construction of the contiguous port of Pallice, will leave La Rochelle a stagnation created by the french Revolution and imperials conflicts.
The port of la Pallice which sheltered an underwater base during the second world war, was in the center of an enemy part of resistance until the end of the war, and the city of the La Rochelle was the last released French city, on May 8, 1945.

La Rochelle is a french commune, located in the department of the Charente-Maritime of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 80055 Rochelais in 2004, distributed out of 32 km², that is to say 2501 hab./km².

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the anticyclone of the Azores, and the thermal inertia of the ocean, the average sunning of La Rochelle is close to that of Perpignan, and is best of Atlantique coast with 2250 hours of annual sunning.
Soft winters, and moderate pluviometry supports the development of plants and Mediterranean trees, like the holm oak.

Je viens de rentrer de mon périple asiatique et je suis un peu "sonné" et j'ai de la peine à reprendre mes esprits mais je vois que sur TE les choses avancent! Beaucoup de belles images dont celles de ta gallerie en particulier que je trouve superbes. Toujours bien soignées, bien documentées et parfaitement dans l'esprit de TE, je dois dire que tu fais un travail remarquable.
Avec application,régulièrement et sans quitter ton pays, tu nous montres châteaux, églises, ponts, chappelles, villages pittoresque, Valentine et ses mouettes et bien d'autres choses encore. Toutes ces petites merveilles de ce patrimoine unique qui font la beauté de la France.

Bonjour,

Sympa cette vue inhabituelle de la Rochelle. J'y suis allé il y a quelques années et je me souviens très bien de cette petite cabane sur la gauche où j'ai pris les billets pour le bateau qui se rends à Fort Boyard. Mais au retour un orage d'été nous à mal mené et ce n'était pas du tout le même mer que sur ta photo.

This looks more like fort and castle than harbor. It is interesting to look at history and how the countries along the Atlantic began the rule of the seas - Portugal, Spain, France because all facing the same ocean.

Your series of architecture shots are always very well described in your notes and such information is useful for us to understand the history behind the buildings in France.

Bonjour Joel ,
une vue si célèbre , pour tpus les marins de France ... et du monde . On pourrait penser au départ qu'il manque un peu de contrastes (ciel, mer , pierres) , mais les tonalités sont jolies et l'image agréable .

Hello Joël,
A good capture from one of my favourite towns in this part of France. I like the inclusion of the boat, which so much evokes the port, but, more especially the way the light plays across the towers. The tricolour is an interesting bonus. Must get back there soon.

Une très belle vue sur le port avec une netteté parfaite et une belle harmonie dans les couleurs. Le drapeau français claque au vent, il "claque" aussi dans l'image. Les personnes sur le port donnent une intéressante idée de l'échelle.

Image très sobrie, avec quelque surexposition locale qu'on peut excuser.
Les donjons sont correctement decentrés et le cadrage est bien partagé entre mer et terre/ciel.

Merci de ce partage Joel. J'ai vu cette charmante ville au bord de la mer. Les tours que tu nous montres sont toujours dans ma memoire ainsi que deux magazins des cartes postales anciennes. J'ai vu cette image avec emotions.

J'aime beaucoup les bords de mer. Cela fait plaisir de voir un peu d'eau. Le décor est bien cadré et les deux monuments créent une bonne compo ici. Les couleurs sont peut-être un peu pâles.

I've spent a wonderful holiday in La Rochelle and this picture brings back lovely memories. I've seen you posted several pictures of LR, one better than the other. They are so sharp and well composed with a fine light which show very well the main characteristics of this charming city.
