Photographer's Note

This fine house and garden in the village of Sainte-Radegonde rather took my fancy. It is one of several imposing houses in this village, which seems to have more than its fair share of them for such a small village.

The village of Sainte-Radegonde is in the commune of Baignes-Sainte-Radegonde, which was formed in 1865 from the merger of Sainte-Radegonde and the now larger village of Baignes. The area has long history dating back until at least Roman times when there was a settlement known as Cathmeriacum. It lay on the Roman road that linked Saintes to Bordeaux.

Quite an extensive article about the geography and history of Baignes-Sainte-Radegonde can be found on the French wikipedea site here:. It is written, of course, in French.
