ANGLES-SUR-L'ANGLIN - FORTIFIED CASTLE

Standing on a rocky spur and overlooking "one of the prettiest villages in France" on the river Anglin, the proud ruins of this XIIth. century fortified castle can be reached by stone steps. A superb view of the Anglin valley is to be seen from the chapel as well as the Saint-Croix quarter of the village with its wonderful plain-tile-roofed houses and the Romanesque Sainte-Croix church. A must to be seen : the village of Angles, the "Jours d'Angles" workshop demonstrating how this fine pulled-thread embroidery is created ; at the time of Napoleon III, over 300 embroiderers worked to supply the grand Parisian shops.
