The castle of Renaissance style builds around 1625 per Jacques de Morienne, tax collector of Fontenay, Fontenay-le-Comte, will remain unfinished.

The castle which rises on the foundations of a former castle dating from the 15th century, is flanked square towers, and is decorated of gargoyles imitating guns. One reached at his interior court by a drawbridge.
It is the only castle of the Vendée which have ditches filled with water.

The castle is in edge of the national forest of Mervent-Vouvant which covers 5000 hectares, characterized by the omnipresence of water in the form of brooks, rivers, lakes and a fauna and an abundant flora.

Mervent is a french commune, located in the department of the Vendée of the Pays de la Loire, populated of 1059 inhabitants in 1999, divided out of 23 km², that is to say 47 hab./km².

The commune of Mervent is located at the confluence of the Mère river and the Vendée river from where the name of the commune is resulting, Mervent.

On the heights of the main forest of Mervent-Vouvant, a strengthened site was established by the Celts at the 6th century before Jesus-Christ, and is one of only known in the West of France.
