Photographer’s Note

This past sunday was the departure of the Vendée Globe , (also nicknamed the Everest of the Seas). This is a sailing race with Imoca 60 feet boats, round the world, single-handed with no stop. So it starts and finishes in Les Sables d'Olonne, on the west coast of France and happens every 4 years.
The first race left in November 1989 and was a great adventure; we didn’t really know what would happen to the skippers.
Now the race has evolved greatly, it has become a regatta with intensive competition and highly professional skippers.
This time, 30 sailing boats started the race and it will take them about 3 months to complete the trip.
Thousands of people came on sunday to encourage the skippers, when going out of the harbour. Skippers are always impressed with the amazing greeting they get in Les Sables.
When I arrived on the pier, there were already 4 lines of spectators in front of me. I'm only 1m58 high so I couldn't see much. Small but smart, I came with a stepladder and therefore had an overview much better than those in front of me!
On the photo, the view is in front of the green lighthouse on the pier of Les Sables d’Olonne. You can see the other side of the channel called La Chaume (a fisherman village) with the Arendel tower and the church of La Chaume.
In the channel, 4 boats are passing:
1st boat sponsored by Akena and skippered by Arnaud Boissieres (France)
2nd boat sponsored by Kapsch and skippered by Norbert Sedlacek (Austria)
3rd boat sponsored by Great American III and skippered by Rich Wilson (USA)
4th boat sponsored by Roxy and skippered by Samantha Davies (United Kingdom)
The image lacks of luminosity but the rainhoods on the head of the spectators explains you why!

pas évident de faire des photos dans une telle foule
mais tu as bien su rendre la ferveur qu'engendre un tel évènement

Hi Estelle ,Very good image with an array of interesting details,you have framed the boats well ,nicely balanced between the spectators and the architectural background, with your steps you are in danger of becoming a press photographer. Ah retour au bercail pour suivre le grand evenement, bon resultat au dessus des tetes, pas une folle lumiere ici non plus mais les cires mettent de la couleur et la photo de reportage se doit de faire avec les conditions au moment de l'evenement.

Bonjour Estelle,

Joli cadrage pour une photo de reportage qui montre la sortie du port. Bonne idee l escabeau qui t a permis d offrir un angle de visée permettant d inclure harmonieusement les rangées de spectateurs.
Pour la lumiere, comme tu l as ecrit, on ne choisit pas toujours, mais ca donne un apercu du moment et ca s inscrit bien dans une optique de reportage, temoignage.

Bonjour Estelle, pour avoir vu des images télévisée, montrant certain participant au prise avec la tempête, le mot solitude est faible, j’ajouterai à ton titre qui est cependant bien choisis, pour cette course hors norme, j’ajouterai la foule avant les condition extrême de grande solitude, l’ambiance à la sortie du port est bien rendue sur la photo, tout comme ces capuches et ses gens en-mitoufflé et frissonnant regroupé en un attroupement de connaisseur, ou de curieux, mais personne ne s’y trompe, ce genre de défit sur l’eau est l’une des dernier défis humain, ou ces marins que ce soit homme, ou femmes, vivent vraiment une grande aventure à l’état brut en risquant leur vie, ça c’est de l’aventure, très bonne photo de reportage, bien amicalement

Il y en a déjà quelques uns qui sont rentrés au port !!! Pas mal l'idée de l'escabeau... et tu as eu raison parce que je trouve la photo particulièrement réussie, j'aime beaucoup la perspective et la profondeur. Cette foule offre un jeu de couleur dans cette ambiance grise bien agréable. Un grand coup de chapeau à ces solitaires. Merci Estelle.

Good capture from the grey day when the race sets off. Your compo is well disposed and put in a frame closing in the event.

On crowded occasions like this it can be impossible to frame an image of just the event. You have cleverly used the crowd in your compositon, allowing the viewer to feel part of the occasion.

Estelle, first let me apologize, I saw this yesterday, read yout not, researched it and then forgot to comment. This is a good TE shot. It is a good photo in all ways and it brings our attention to something we would not normally see. I surely hope you keep us up to date on the finish of this race.

Vu les circonstances cela n'a pas du être simple de faire cette photo et pourtant elle est d'une grande qualité et elle illustre très bien ce que rappelle ton titre c'àd le contraste entre cette foule et la solitude qui attend ces navigateurs. Une très bonne photo reportage.
